Things you do NOT carry while doing

I am an avid rockclimber and kayaker. I do not do EITHER of these armed as I feel the threat of losing a firearm while doing it is too high to risk. I can't see myself getting mugged on a mountainside, or robbed in the rapids, so I can not find a NEED to be armed. That said, I am armed as soon as I reach my truck. I was wondering if there are is anyone else that has hobbies (be polite

) they engage in whilst unarmed. If so, what?

I sometimes hike or bike without a gun, but recently I’ve acquired equipment that makes carrying much more practical. I also visit the coast a good bit and I never carry at the beach.

Actually, there are ways to secure firearms to the body during both those activities. A small revolver can be held pretty tightly to the body with a belly band.

In my area, opportunities for rafting generally involve pretty secluded areas, which can be home to different types of hostile wildlife.

Over the past 14 years, I have carried my firearm nearly every day and nearly everywhere I go. The exceptions fall into one of two categories:

1) It is against the law for me to carry in that place, OR

2) It is literally impossible for me to carry concealed while there.

Also in regards 2), my threshold for "impossible" is a lot higher than most.

Going to work since its illegal,
Going to soccer games (least everyone passes through the same metal detectors)
While skiing since its not needed and I'd worry bout losing it in a fall or worse an avalanche

Those spandex shirts with the gun pouch are nice until you bend over in the kitchen and the Velcro opens and you get to watch your loaded pistol land hammer first with the muzzle pointed at your face.

Needless to say, that shirt is retired.

Don't carry while at the gym, or on the beach in a bathing suit, or while wearing loose gym-type clothes and doing yard work, or at the nude beach (

), or while taking a shower or swimming in my pool. Don't carry into the USPO, or the University medical building to see a doctor. Don't carry while I am shooting sporting clays (a concealed gun that is), or while riding my bike, or even taking my morning walk - just not necessary where I live and do those activities.

Absolutely no danger whatsoever of encountering a big, off-leash, aggressive dog during your walks and bike rides? Even in good neighborhoods, I've seen too many news stories where people needed to save a child's life from an aggressive dog.

I don't carry when swimming or showering, obviously not any place where it's illegal, any place that is posted No Guns (even though it carries no force of law here), or any place/time when I just don't feel like it which is probably about 5-10% of the time.

Swimming or showering, no. Sleeping... not unless I fall asleep in my chair.

Canoeing or kayaking, yes. My Glocks don't rust.

Not in MY neighborhood - now if I were to bike for a distance, that would be a different story; mostly retired folks with little yap dogs who also walk in the early AM. When my golden was still alive I took her without a leash and everyone knew her by name, never a fight with other dogs - again, just the way it is in MY little area of the world. There were two that would raise hell from behind a fence - nasty - but they are no longer around.

My area also has a lot of horse farms, so nice area and not so urban with major guard dogs - and being a subdivision, shooting a gun would not be good. I have carried some pepper spray, even a walking stick at times when there were some unruly pups

Honestly... the times I dont carry far outweigh the times I do.
I carry when I'm out running errands and while working.
I dont take it anywhere that I cant keep it on me or in the truck.
Its never left pool side in the towl bag, for example.

Otherwise, I take the darn thing off as soon as I shut the door behind me.

Aside from places that are illegal, I don't carry at the beach or when in my pool. I enjoy flat-water kayaking, and I carry there because I don't know what I will encounter at remote launch & recovery sites. A dry bag protects the pistol while paddling.

I run, bike and kayak myself and never carry while running or riding.

Generally, while I'm a flat water kayaker, I do not carry then either. If I'm overnight camping with the boat though, I do carry. That is worth the risk for me.

Seems like I just read about a canoeist getting shot and killed by a landowner,maybe in Missouri.Oh,I remember,it was on youtube.

Another weird one,maybe 30 ish years ago,in Northern Colorado,as I recall,a woman jogger was kidnapped,taken as "bride" by a couple of "mountain men",father/son team.

A firearm was the only answer after a large,persistant black bear modified my former spouses derriere when I was 200 river miles from the nearest road in Ak.

Mountain lions mess people up occasionally.I spotted one off a trail less than 200 yds from me.I was unarmed.He saw me.He was not afraid of me,ambled off at his own speed.

Anything can happen.

After a bit of research,the woman was kidnapped in 1984 in Montana.

I've always preferred a stainless N.M. Blackhawk when and where I'm not comfortable with blue, and so far have managed to keep from losing one. For a bit smaller gun, the SP101 does quite well under adverse conditions, too.

Ski Mountaineering/touring

Not that I couldn't but, there really is no point. It could also be a safety concern if something went wrong where traveling UL and fast is essential in a very physically demanding environment, its already a gear intensive sport and every ounce is counted. There is no need to burden yourself with something that will never be needed.
