The Appleseed Project featured in the New York Times!
The Appleseed Project has definitely hit the main stream! We are very excited to announce that the New York Times has published an in-depth, six page feature on our all-volunteer Marksmanship and Heritage program. Please read the NYT piece here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/01/ma...nted=1&_r=1&hp Unfortunately, there are several mis-characterizations in that article that The Appleseed Project wishes to address. It appears as if we were unfairly portrayed by a Mainstream Media outlet using subtle innuendo, outright falsehoods, and everything in between to label us as something we are not, as has happened with many pro-Liberty organizations in recent times. Please read our official response to the New York Times below and we invite you to help us educate anyone and everyone with these corrections. Quote:

It is sad when reports of this type turn on the group like the NYT did.
BUT is anyone really surprised that a “rag” like the NYT would bend a story,,, any story to its own needs or agenda. Nothing nearly as big, but back in the 90’s a “news” reporter called up the gun shop that I worked in and asked the owner if she could come over with a photographer and do an article on guns shops in the aria. The owner could only see the free advertising. I tried to talk him out of it but they showed up with a lovely young reporter and asked many good and relevant questions. Then took a photo with the owner holding a tricked out AR. When the article came out, and this was around the time of the Clinton assault ban crap. The article was very anti firearm and the photo held a caption of “This is the kind of killing weapon that is being sold in our city.” Also keep in mind that at the same time the now president of the bradey group Helmke was a government official of our aria. I’m sorry, but we lost the last “honest” reporter when we lost Walter Cronkite. |

It is to be expected that mainstream reporters are going to screw you over any time guns are the subject.
But I remember those articles by FRED in shotgun news at the start of appleseed.....be damn glad the paper didnt get hold of those lol, Good ol FRED minced no words that teaching marksmanship to shoot UN troops patrolling U.S. streets was what appleseed's vital mission was . While these days it touts good family fun , cookouts and shooting... ..it didnt start out that way. Some of us have a memory. I would no more go to an appleseed shoot, Than I would go out and help the clan pick up trash on one of thier adopt a highway stretches of road...and they are kinder /gentler these days too.(Just ask them) Last edited by p99guy; July 30, 2010 at 03:17 PM. |

After reading the full article: It could just me but I didn't think the article really makes any of the 'accusations' that the Appleseed folks are rebutting.
The NYT article does touch on the "Fred" stuff, which it should but basically takes "Fred" at his word that those were youthful indiscretions. The Appleseed response seems to suggest the NYT article is a total hit job, which it isn't; but how many people on Appleseed's mailing list (or gun forums) will even read the full article? Why bother reading "Pravda" when someone can just tell you "It's all lies!" and get you incensed and indignant about lefties and the MSM? |

I'm going to have to agree with Willie D above...
I think somebody at appleseed is firing a little too early and is off the mark.
I've only read the first two pages, but so far the article looks pretty 'fair' to me. It states appleseeds position but it also shows some of the folks that attend appleseed and we all can imagine there are some loose screws.... always are..... |

Ughh:barf: the NYT makes me sick...
They don't directly make some of those accusations, but the clear message which is perceived through the lines is there. |

I didn't see that... it seemed pretty close to fair to me...
yes the writer interviewed and showed some of the dark side of the whole issue of being a rifleman and understanding the history of our country and how some folks want a new revolution to start today... but this is the truth.
I hope and believe our RKBA is the one thing that will keep us from having that revolution. |

Michael Bane (of Shooting Gallery, Cowboys, DownRangeTV, etc) featured the NYT story on his weekly radio show:
http://www.downrange.tv/podcast.htm I was most impressed with how he relied on his background in investigative journalism to look at why the NYT and other mainstream media outlets create articles like they do. This should be required listening for every journalist and journalism major. |
