I am now an Appleseed RIFLEMAN

I recently came back from my 1st Appleseed event in Corona, CA. There were about 80 people in the 2 days that it was held. 6 people earned their Rifleman Patch. Best shooter of the day shot a 238. 250 is the highest score you can receive. I shot a 212 and let me tell all of you who think you can shoot off hand "easily" at 25m, it is VERY difficult. Appleseed is a great program for $70 for 2 days, and women shoot free; therefore, I dragged my wonderful wife along too. She is not a shooter at all and is pretty much scared of anything that goes "BANG", and by the end of the 2nd day, she shot a 191. Thank God the instructors were awesomely persistent and patient with everyone.

I shot a Colt (Umarex) M4 Ops, 22LR with a Redfield Revolution 2-7x scope. I first threw on a $50 Barska plinker and was completely shocked to notice the reticle would jump every 10 rounds, so the 2nd day I threw on a much more quality scope and I was shooting much better and consistently. I didn't have any problems with my rifle except after 500rds there was some major lead fouling on the feed ramp, which caused FTFs. A quick scrub and it was back to 100%.

My wife used a Ruger 10/22 SS with a Barska 3-9 scope. Again, had a few malfunctions due to lead buildup on the feed ramp, but after a quick cleaning, it was 100%.

I was shocked to see other people bring out the cheapest guns they could find. I mean CHEAP. So many people found out that their guns SUCK and later broke over the shoot. Come on people, you have an expensive hobby here, don't buy cheap stuff, it is just going to fail you. Cheap doesnt mean "low price", it means "low quality". You can buy a Marlin 795 for under $200, that doesnt make it a "cheap" rifle. Quality optics makes a BIG difference too. I learned the hard way.

Conclusion:

Appleseed has a GREAT program for EVERYONE. People showed up with $3,000+ AR-15s, competition grade 10/22s and learned their lesson that it is not the gun that creates accuracy, its the person pulling the trigger. Everyone who is into shooting rifles owes it to themselves to try an Appleseed shoot, you will improve in 2 days and you will have a GREAT time doing it. Also, bring a semi-auto with detachable magazines. Bolt actions couldn't make the cut this time.

Slight correction: Consistent, scientific aiming devices make a big difference.

A cheap rickety scope that bounces its reticle is worth less than the fixed irons that come on a 10/22. And those things are gawd awful.

Tech Sights cost $60 or so.

Williams FP-TK sights for various platforms cost about $100.

$200+ scopes are NOT necessary to shoot Rifleman.

Is this your wife?

She needs to work on her cheek weld. A "jaw" weld is no good, because your jaw can move. Consistency means bone-on-bone, and no muscle, and gives you accuracy. Also, that pointy-part of her elbow: it ain't stable. Flat-on-flat. She needs to lean forward so the back end of her tricep is resting against the top of her shin.

Either a lower scope mount, a smaller objective scope, iron sights, or a raised cheek pad is in order to get her eye and cheek in the right place for the rear sight.

ETA: Nope, now I see it - she needs to pick the buttstock up higher in her pocket. See how the heel of the butt is barely in the pocket? You want the toe of the buttstock in the pocket, and that brings the stock up higher for a good cheek weld, and also stops your head from canting sideways.

Now... what are YOU going to do with that 212 Rifleman score? You gonna just sew the patch onto your range bag and be done with it, or are you gonna go out and help make more Riflemen, and bring more awareness to the debt of liberty we owe to the founders of this nation?

Hit the trail with LayloPro... he's a heck of an instructor. Same with kool-aid and Bob210. Or V. Or SavageShootr. Oh yeah, and BaldDragn too. I meet the best people out Appleseeding.

One last correction: The AQT was originally designed with the M1903 Springfield rifle in mind... a 5 round bolt action stripper-clip-fed .30-06 rifle.

It CAN be done with bolt actions.

This guy:

Shot a 242 with that bolt action there.

I'm working on it with a Mosin Nagant 91/30, left-handed. Then, I'll be working on it with a Winchester 94 in .30-30.

ANY rifle with service-grade ammunition, to a 4MOA standard. That's the goal. The K98, M1903 and Mosins are not exceptions.
