so, I've been wanting a red pine squirrel sniper rifle lately, & with the close proximity to out buildings, & such, the lack of richochet is a premium... I'm a reloader, & not as much of a rim fire guy, but after lots of reading on the "throne"... I've finally decided on 17 Mach 2 for a cartridge... then I was torn between just buying a new Savage, building a rifle from some other modern repeater, or converting an old single shot... so I was pricing available donars, & almost bought a used stainless Savage ( appearently they don't list a stainless 17 mach 2 anymore ??? ), but that didn't work out, & because I want a good & modern scope, I decided on a magazine fed modern bolt action... but finding a base rifle "cheap enough" to justify a build, was the tough part, I was looking at old Remingtons to start with, & looking for a full sized adult rifle... a couple weeks ago I found a very nice Marlin 780 in 22 rf... this is a nice adult sized rifle with some fancier engraving on the wood ( it's not really checkering ) I got it at a very reasonable price... Brownels had 17 caliber barrel liners pretty reasonably priced & my builder buddy is wanting one, so I bought the chamber reamer & 2 barrel liners... his will be built on an old Norinco CZ style bolt action, mine on this Marlin 780 bolt action... it should be a kinda fun project gun, I'm looking at putting a full sized 3 X 9 or 4 X 12 scope on mine, & hope to be able to pick off red pine squirrels from the picnic table on my patio in the front yard, through & into my windbreak 50-100 yards away, & through openings in the pine trees...
this is a pic of the rifle "before"
I've got some other 17 caliber guns, a couple Remington 700's in 17 Remington caliber, a 10" Contender in 17K Hornet, but the lil Mach 2 will be my smallest so far... anyone ever done anything similar ???
