As much as I enjoy Chuck Hawks, this is pure BS

To be serious, its obvious that deer are not harder to kill (though logic dictates that there would be at least some deer out there whose daddies were tough enough and resistant enough to lead poisoning to survive a poor marksmans bullet, passing the genes on to their spawn), but that marksmanship is getting poorer, as are average tracking skills, and perhaps just a little bit that people these days fear losing wounded game more. Its not the happy go lucky hunting era of the 20s. I'm just going to assume it was happy go lucky.

Combine that with magnumitis and day glo orange "camo" ( ) and Average Hunter ends up buying a .325 WSSUM instead of a .30-30.

I blame the synthetic fibers actually... Wool is much quieter.

I also believe that the batf frowns on anything bigger than 50 caliber for smokeless powder and us civilians

Not entirely. Cartridges larger than .50" need a "sporting purposes exemption", and many exist: .600 & .700 Nitro Express, .577 Tyrannosaur, etc.
