8x60 mauser

Anybody have one? do you like it? Will it squeeze into an intermediate length action? (Yugoslav 24/47). I have four - 8x57 mausers,
and was thinking about having some thing a little different. Also going to turn the full length 98 into a 9.3x62 Mauser.
Thoughts on the 8x60?

Look around and get different answers.

The usual legend is that after WWI, the Versailles Treaty strictly limited the number of 8x57s that could be held in Germany, military and commercial both. So the 8x60 was devised for hunting rifles. The case was longer but bullets would have to be seated deeper to give an OAL suitable for a regular '98. I guess you could squeeze it into a Yugo that way, but if you did, it would offer no advantage over the standard 8x57.

There are four variants, the 8x60 (or 8x60J) for use in .318" barrels, the 8x60M (or 8x60S) for use in .323" barrels, the 8x60R (rimmed) for drillings, and the 8x60 Magnum Bombe for great big game hunting.

Phil Sharpe has a different version, that it was a later development and that the OAL of the standard round would not fit the magazine of a Mod '98 but would SOME military actions and of course sporters would be made to suit.

It sounds like a lot of trouble to me.
8x57 at Euro specs will do anything that the 8x60M or S will; and you would be on your own loading up Magnum Bombes.

8x60 is a dead cartridge used only in civilian rifles in germany for about a decade. ammo is non-existent, casings would have to be made from trimmed 30-06 cartridge and the end result would be a cartridge essentially the same as 8x57.

A 308 Win is a better conversion for an intermediate Yugo action in terms of action length, although a 6.5x55 or 7x57 are also excellent choices.

If you want something as simple as reaming the chamber just for "something different" then go 8x57 Improved.

I actually have 200 brand new brass (8x60S) that I p/u when I couldn't find any
8x57 in stock anywhere. I was saving it to make 8x57 brass. I rekon I could just be content with the standard 8mm.

I also have two-7x57 mausers, I really don't need another 8, just a whim I guess. But I "will" have a 9.3x62 !!
