Ruger 77/357?

I handled a Ruger 77/357 today and it felt pretty good.

I am wondering if any one has experience with this rifle. I know the 44 would hit harder but I am looking specifically at the 357 model because it would fit with my current ammo.

How about pressure? will the bolt action handle pressure as well as the 1892 lever action clones? Are they accurate? How hard is it to change out the mags? Are the triggers any good from the factory or will it need a gunsmith to work on it? Any other helpful information?

Mine has been very good to me. I shoot mostly 158 grn JSP .357s, but sometimes shoot .38s for fun.

Mine got a new sear from Volquartsen (same trigger group as the 77/22), which makes for a very nice trigger, and it's an easy swap.

The magazines are Ruger's standard rotary design and mine drop out easily. I have a couple of extras.

Overall a really good rifle, IMO.

so wait? the trigger group is the same as the 77/22? wow that is good to know!

I think I may get one and have the barrel cut down to 16-16.5 inches and then I can give my son the family marlin 357.

Mine has been a good shooter with ammo it likes. It seems to prefer the 125 JHP's over the 158's. Doesnt like LSWC's at all.

I tried .38s when I first got it, and got enough "rimlocked" mag stoppages, that I decided they werent worth the bother. The mags are made for the 357's, and the difference in OAL cartridge length, becomes an issue with the .38s.

I initially had a 4x Leupold on the gun, but have since taken it off. The bolt throw comes very close to the scope when open, which I found very annoying. It would be even more annoying, if not unworkable, if they would increase the size of the bolts "knob", which is what Id like to see them do. Its pretty small as it comes.

I tried the NECG "peep" on it as well, and while well made, found it to be fiddly, and interfered with the bolt when mounted in the rear most position, where it should be.

My Marlin seems to like Hornady 140 grain bullets. It would be cool if this gun did too cause I got a ton of them!

I thought I was done buying firearms. Saw one of these in a gun store and bought it. Don't know when I'm going to get a chance to try it out.

Shot some 38 specials. Had feeding problems on first round. Hollow points would not feed first round. The first round would jam. Just first round. Non- hollow point 38 specials fed fine. After the fact I was wondering if the 38 hollow points would have fed fine if I were to insert the mag with a closed bolt and then feed the first round. Next time.

I would rather take a round of 50BMG to the foot than a 22short to the base of the skull. all 26 of my guns are 45/70 govt, 357 mag, 22 or 12 ga... I believe in keeping it simple. Wish my wife did as well...
