Good luck with the 40 S&W.

Black bears are pretty plentiful in SE KY. They are a real nuisance around Cumberland KY. And they have had human-bear encounters at Kingdom Come SP. I personally would not do a lot of tramping around the woods on Pine Mountain without a gun. ..then there are the pot growers (a bigger issue)... and now the meth heads.... Used to be just stills.

Nice now you can get a 357 MAG REVOLVER. And have the best of both worlds . I have a MP 40 C. & RUGER SP101.

Good choice with the .40, I love my .357 but my .40 PX4 is really a more practical weapon (similar power, 3 times the capacity, faster reloads, and of course, ammo is much easier to find!).

If you decide you also need a revolver, you can always pick one up later, after the ammo frenzy dies down. But it won't be because you find your .40 lacking, it'll be because revolvers are just irresistibly cool.

Enjoy, and don't forget the range report!

.357 mag is what i carry for any threats. The best thing is when the SHTF all i do is pull the trigger. If a misfire pull the trigger again no slap the mag and rack the action. And IMO if i cant stop what i am afraid of with 6 shots i probably wouldnt do much better with 15+

Check w/ the park rangers on the effectiveness of bear spray when used on your local bears. Buy a canister and practice w/ it. Learning how to use it when needed is not a good idea. Carry two canisters in case one fails. Watch the expiration dates. Find out if the people in your area feed the bears, etc, etc. If the spray is good for your area, then the dynamics for need and use of gun may change.

I would go with the 357 if it is Stainless Steel. Carrying it in the woods, maybe in the rain.........

I'm sure your .40 will serve you well. However, a wheel gun is always my first choice. The Ruger sp101 is a hell of a nice gun. If money allows, look for one in .357 mag and buy it. You won't regret it. I prefer S&W revolvers, but there is something about that Ruger that just feels right.
