I went to Cabelas last week and 10mm was one of the few pistol rounds they still had in stock. They also had 357 sig and 327 federal and that was it for handgun ammo. The unpopularity for lack of a better term of the 10mm round is actually working in it's favor right now.

10mm is essentially a handloader's cartridge (as are .45LC and .41 Mag).
Yes, I own and load for all of them, and would not have it any other way.

But for anyone who has to buy his own ammo, .45acp is a better choice. And yes, I own and load for .45acp too. And I shoot more .45acp than everything else put together.

Of course, that is just my opinion--but that is what you asked for.

Duane Thomas...

Gun writer & US Army veteran; Duane Thomas wrote a great in-depth review of why the 10mm is not a good choice for defense/protection/duty in the mid-1990s.
I think it was for Handguns magazine. It may be online in 2013.
Thomas made a solid arguement for not using the 10mm.
The big things were that it had problems with feeding/cycles and a lot of recoil/muzzle blast.
It has a high KE level & it's fast(high vel) but I'm not a big fan of the 10mm.

Go with 45 acp. 10mm is a great round but limits you on gun choices. Go 45 and you can choose anything but a Block excuse me glock.

I'm going with .45, simply because no one makes a 10mm compact enough for concealed carry. If I had to carry a .45, it'll be something the size of an AMT .45 Backup. Yes, I carried one for awhile, and after a few minor modifications, it was very reliable.

Completely personal preference. Although the rounds are much different, both would do the job well. Personally, I like to 10mm but that does not mean I don't like .45. Can't go wrong either way.

45 acp hands down just for ammo selection and availability. Plus I like the 45acp. Now if I lived in bear country, that would be another conversation.
This, except my .45 ACPs are in 1911 flavor, which I do carry. But my northern home is in bear country, so I opt for a Glock 29 up there. Not an issue with full-house recoil, but I'm a pretty big guy and have shot 10mm since the 80s.

I am the weapon; my gun is a tool. It's regrettable that with some people those descriptors are reversed.
