22-250 Powder

A friend at work is going to load 22-250 on my press. I've always used Varget or IMR 4064. With powder being hard to find I told him I'd get a list of powders to look for. Besides Varget and IMR 4064 what everyone like? 50 to 55 gr. bullets.He only needs 1 lb so shipping not feasible

I've been reading some good posts about RL15 in the 22-250.I don't like H380 I know it is THE 22-250 powder but I've tried it several times in the last 30+ years I never can get the accuracy I get with Varget or 4064

Have used Benchmark pwder with good results. Not a lot, as 4064 and Varget are my favorites same as Willy.

I've tried Reloader 15, H4895, N140, and H380 in my Remington 700 .22-250 with a 1:14 twist.

So far Reloader 15 has the best overall average for 8 of the top 10 powder / bullet combinations out of a total of 24 different combinations.

The top 5 are all Reloader 15 as well with the best overall average of 0.386 with Berger 52 grain bullets for 76 measured groups and a best load average of 0.252.
Nosler 40 BTs were second with 0.420 for 135 groups and a best load of 0.351, Berger 50 grains were third and 50 grain Nosler BTs were fourth.

N140 was 6th and the 2nd best powder with Berger 52 grain bullets with a .505 average.
H4895 was 8th and the 3rd best powder with Sierra 52 grain SMK bullets with a 0.552 average.

H380's best showing was a distant 13th out of 24 using 55 grain Sierra 55 grain # 1360 bullets with a 0.613 average.

If H380 were all I had then I would use it in my 22/250, but, I would try it with a mag primer. I especially hate to clean a rifle that had ammunition loaded with a ball powder shot thru it!! I have some that I have to use, sure don't like it though!! IMR4064 seems to work the best with Sierra 55gr SP, my rifle is a Winchester featherweight and my age (70 years old) isn't a good combination at the range! William

I'll have to kick-in also; H380 has always been my top choice for .22-250's. Yes, it's a bit dirty. Try std & mag primers to refine accuracy. H380 flows through a powder measure super! Due to the normal 1-14 twist, keep pointed bullets weights under 60gr. If you must shoot heavier bullets 63gr Sierra semi-pointed or 70gr Speers.

I've also had some pretty good luck with H4895 & it burns clean.

I've had good results with H380 and IMR4320.
At the present time I'm loading IMR4320 under Sierra 55 gr Blitzking bullets.

Just to be contrary, my most accurate load to date is a 40 gr Nosler over 36.5 gr. TAC. Puts them in one hole. Too sunny for the chrono that day, but has to be doing 3,900 - 4,000. Otherwise working with H380, but have yet to find the right load.

IMR-3031 always worked for me with 55 gr. Winchester bullets.

I was having the same problem. I like H4350 for it but it was nowhere to found. I've found H414 works very well and has done so apparently for the last 40+ years (according to other reloaders I've talked to). Also Superformance powder has been readily available I guess due to the lack of data for it but it's by far the best powder for getting the 22-250 well past the 4000fps mark, this stuff is nothing short of amazing!

I love Reloder 15. It meters well. My groups seem to be consistently good.

If you want something to experiment, Reloder 10x was produced specifically for the .223 and has been receiving some favorable results in .22-250 for some people. I bought some a while back and I'm experimenting with it.

I have been messing around with H380 and 50gr Nosler Ballistics, Thy make a good pair. With a Weatherby Vanguard SUB MOA(1-14twist), 35- 35.5gr H380, Hornady Brass, CCI BR-2 primers, and 50gr Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint Bullets I am shooting an average .70 with .75 being my worst, 6 shot group including the fouling shot. So with that being said I think H380 is the powder to go with even though it is very dirty.
