Making bullets from Pennies....

Legal issues aside, has anyone tried making bullets from pennies?

I don't suppose it's analogous to the gilding metal bullets from Barnes, Hornady(?) etal., but would it work? Is there a DIY alloy that would reduce the galling effect of the copper in a barrel?

I'm thinking 9mm, .45ACP, and maybe a few rifle rounds in the 30 cal range.

Maybe more academic than practical, but as Mulder said, "The answer is out there..."

Ummm aren't pennies like 99% zinc with a very thin copper plating?

You could buy a lot of bullets for the cost of the gear. Besides, defacing US coin/currency is illegal. From the US Code:

Sections 331 and 332 specify that it is illegal to alter coins. The Code mentions altering, scaling, mutilating, defacing, impairing, diminishing and lightening as the illegal forms of coin defacing. Individuals are liable if they create defaced coins, but also if they import, possess, sell or pass them.

Section 333 covers paper currency. It states that it is illegal to cut, deface, mutilate, disfigure, perforate or rejoin bills. Section 333 also pertains to any other activity that is intended to make a bill unfit to be reissued and remain in circulation
