I do have a favorite rifle. I learned that today.

If you had asked me a week ago if I had a favorite rifle, I'd have mumbled and hesitated, and said "probably not". But this morning I put the deer rifles in the safe and took out my old Ruger 77V in 220 Swift. It now has a new (well, relatively new) Douglas barrel in a lighter contour. I took it over to my shooting bench and sent 3 rounds downrange and they touched in a 3-leaf-clover pattern, and 3/4 of an inch high. Man that old gun feels good in my hands, and it surely will shoot. And I see that the pigs are digging around in my pasture since the rains came. This calls for action...

Do you fellows have a real favorite that you'll admit to, or a special rifle you'd reach for if there was a long shot that you absolutely needed to make?

My Marlin 917v is my go-to varmint gun, if I do my part I put all 4 rounds into about 1/4" from 75 yards. Its as it was out of the box except for a little bit of work I did to the trigger replacing the trigger return spring to lighten it. There have not been many squirrels that have managed to get away once in its cross-hairs.

Other than that, the old Marlin 336 in .35 Remington has been killing deer here for generations. If I was ever taken on a bear hunt, it would probably be my choice.

At some point I want to put together a left handed bolt action .308 that I will keep for the rest of my life. Want to go all out and make myself a precision instrument. I just can't find a left handed bolt action .308 that I am happy with.

My Ruger M77 in 7x57 is about as close as I get to a favorite. Or maybe it's my Mark X Mauser in 22-250.

My favorite is the Winchester 1894 (.30-30) - it's a nice looking rifle (slim and sleek), handles so well, and fun to shoot. And, a historical classic. Only drawback is that they are no longer made in the USA.

I have a lot of rifles, but my favorite is a Ruger M77R in 300WM. Purchased it over 40 years ago. Unless I am hunting varmits, it is what I use. Any time I drag out the rifles for a bit of shooting at the range, it comes along.

Didn't really have a favorite till three weeks ago.

Back in 2003 I bought an as new condition M-48 Mauser from Big 5. I took it to the range one time shooting old surplus Turkish ammo. Accuracy was about 4" to 6" at 100yrds open sights. I was a bit dissapointed in the rifle and it has been a safe queen since. I had bought a box of Sellier & Bellot 8mm back then, but never shot any of it. Three weeks ago I bought a real nice Tula 91/30 Mosin Nagant and as I was walking out to goto the range to test fire it, I thought I would bring the Mauser and that box of S&B ammo.

All I can say is wow. I had three sub 2" 5 shot groups and one 3" 5 shot group with it open sights at 100yrds. Getting away from milsurp ammo and using good quality ammo was the trick.

This m-48 Yugo Mauser is my go-to rifle for hunting and anything else now. I am about to drop a dime on reloading for 8mm for it also.

I'm keeping her stock military and open sights.

As of yesterday, I do have a favorite...my new Ruger Gunsite Scout. I'll bet that would help alleviate any pig invasions!

My favorite walk-about rifle is a CZ 455, .22WMR.
My favorite large varmint rifle is either a .243 Win, 700, or a Tikka T3 Lite in the same caliber, depending on whether I'll be walking or sitting more.
My favorite offhand plinker semi-auto rifle is an accurized 10-22.
My favorite offhand informal target rifle is an accurized Rem 504.
My favorite lever-action rimfire rifle is a Marlin 39A.

My first is my favorite. Not exactly a tack driver. Rem 7600 in 30-06. They say you never forget your first. It has taken many a whitetail and it always finds its mark exactly where I expected it to.
New favorite is a Marlin lever 30-30 i gave my son. It groups 1-1/2" at 100yds and has the absolute sweetest trigger of any firearm I have ever owned. Not to mention has plenty of power to drop anything I have hunted yet it has very little recoil. Just a pleasure to shoot. Glad my boy has it now.

Probably my Marlin 25N, being a .22LR it can't do longshots, but it's special because my dad got it for me awhile ago for Christmas as my first gun.

Thanks! My range is my grandfather's farm. That picture was taken the day that my brother and my dad each made shots hitting the bullseye (touching one another's actually) at 500 yards. My brother had never shot past 50 yards, and my dad hadn't shot a rifle in 25 years!
