extra ammo for home defense?

Do you carry extra ammo for your home defense shotgun? If so, how do you carry it? On the gun? In a pocket?

I do carry extra HD ammo on the two shotguns. 5 to 6 rounds.

I have more ammo in the bedroom closet and basement if it is needed.

And in the bedroom closet... but it amuses me to keep some in the "powder room."

6 rounds in the magazine tube, 6 more on a detachable nylon side saddle. More rounds are absolutely necessary for an HD shotgun.

EDIT: I'll add that this setup is for my only gun. A shotgun paired with a pistol would absolutely be better, but I've only got one so far. Better make the most of it.

Just six in the tube for me. If I can't do it with six, then extra ammo is probably not my biggest concern.

I keep 9 in the tube and then 6 on a side saddle. If 4 don't get the job done, then I am in trouble. The 6 in the side saddle are just for added comfort.

I have a Remington Marine Magnum that holds 6+1. I don't leave it chambered so hat leaves me with 6. I am also of the thought that if 6 rounds won't do the trick, more rounds won't help. I keep a handgun nearby with extra mags so I'm not overly concerned.

The shot gun is more for the "safe room". I would grab the pistol and get everyone in the safe room. Then cover the door with the shot gun. If anyone comes through the door, they are going to get some buck shot in the chest (unless we get invaded by midgets... Then it might be a head shot or even miss them!).

My Maverick has 5x #4 Buck in the mag and 5x #00 Buck in a stock sleeve. Two more boxes are sitting with it.

I much prefer the speedfeed stock over a sidesaddle or bandolier. Much more streamlined and slicker than a side saddle. And the weight of the slugs further back helps with my shotgun's balance, especially when the magtube is full.

I have heard complaints about speedfeed stocks that shells can shake loose and fall out under recoil. Well, I have shot my 590a1 hundreds, possibly thousands of times. And I have never had a shell shake loose ever...

Yes, but it's not on the shotgun, I keep loose rounds in a claymore bag, slugs in one pouch, 00 buck in the other. the bag is stored with the shotgun, and the 6 round tube is full, a total of over 100 rounds.

I just keep the 5+1 rounds that my shotgun holds. I also have an old S&W model 19 .357 as backup. If that doesn't do the trick I'm in serious trouble.
I do keep a couple of boxes of shells in top of bedroom closet also. I figure that most bad guys are going to try and break in late at night/early morning so I won't have pockets available at the time <G>. Of course, my rottwieler would probably think that this is a free meal coming through the door - so they will have to contend with him first. I swear he's just a furry stomach with legs.

5 in the mag, 5 in the stock sleeve, 4 more on the other side of stock sleeve held in place with bicycle tubes cut about 1/2 inch(makes a very strong rubber band), and a 50 round bandolier.

Does your home defense plan involve throwing on a belt and holstered pistol? Because if you run out of shotgun ammo and are not near a pistol you are SOL....

Shotguns might not be magic, but they are ten times the fight stopper than any service caliber handgun.... I would rather reload my shotgun than transition to a pistol.

The key is to reload before you are completely out of ammo. When you are down to 1 or 2 rounds left (if possible), keep the gun aimed in the direction that the threat most likely will appear from and reload with your weak hand.

I have a Mossberg 590A1 with a light and a Specter Gear buttstock side saddle. I also have a +1 magazine extension so I keep 6 in the magazine and 6 in the side saddle. I also have 50 round bandolier as well.

Eh, I might not even grab the shotgun at all. Pretty handy to have a free hand with the pistol.

i don't know man, a pump shotgun and a 50 round bandolier with buckshot and slugs makes a badass weapon system for hd. i love handguns too but they are pea shooters in comparison. btw i only have slugs on the back end of the bandolier for just in case.

i was about to say how easy it is to reload a shotgun and they will be the next assault weapons to ban. it won't end with ar15s or aks or high cap.

anyway i have 30 years experience with pump shotguns killing small game and big game. there where times i was running after squirrels and reloading, i killed them. same with running deer. you would think i had a 20+ round mag on my shotgun(capacity only 3). reloading is no problem.

if you shoot(with handgun) an armed person, chances are you will be shot at and maybe hit right back. mythbusters did a test with a hanging pig on a hook. they shot it with all kinds of pistols and rifles(even 30-06). only the 12 ga. knocked it off the hook.

there is no way to know who is invading your home. a dumb crack head? or a smart criminal with body armor? armor piercing rounds or any rifle is out of the question for hd for me. i couldn't live with myself if i killed a neighbor or their little children. my sawed off mossbergs and #4 buck have a perfect pattern for hd distance head shots.

pump shotguns are just too darn cheap not to have one for hd. handguns are for ccw and backup.
