300yrd target scope

Getting a 223 target rifle in the spring and will be shooting targets out to 300 yards. Was thinking of getting a Leupold FXlll 12x40 AO fixed power scope. Opinions and suggestions welcomed.

What kind of targets, what position?

If tiny targets and/or benchrest, you would benefit from more magnification.

If prone or field position with sling or bipod on bullseyes or humanoids, you are ok.

I started in F class (bipod) with a 3.5-10, replaced on warranty with a 4-12, always at maximum power.
But I upgraded to a 8.5-25 variable and worked my way up the scale to full power except when mirage was bad.
If I got a fixed power for that, it would be a 20X.

I shoot a LEpuold 12 X, AO on my 22-250. I had target turrets and a targdot installed by Lepould. It is deadly in a dog town and yes I hit dogs at 300 pluss yards with it.

That 12X should work fine at 300 and quite a bit farther i would think.

I've not owned one... but I'm considering a fixed 16 or 20 for 600-1000 yard steel, and have read nothing but praise for the SS line of scopes from SWFA and if I go fixed, that will be my choice.

They don't have a 12x, but 10X is more than adequate at that range, in either the rear or side focus- and less $ than the Leupy. Worth a look.
