More bang for the buck...

Gander mountain, just under $100 with tax, no shipping because I can pick it up in person.
http://www.gandermountain.com/modper...3&merchID=4006

The Tula in the tuna can is however slightly cheaper, I have read some bad things on here and other places concerning Tula, I would think post SHTF when money is less relevant one would be in serious regret for having been remiss with some things to save a dime or two...

Opinions on the Remington UMC, and or others that get maximum investment value.

I am thinking about keeping around 1k on hand, rotating it as I play around here and there.

So what doe you guys consider the best bang for my buck, and where to get it.

Lucky Gunner has PMC 55 gr FMJBT - 1000 rds for $359 plus shipping.
They are in Tennessee so shipping won't be bad at all... shipping to an Austin, TX. zip (just a guess on my part) is $17, so around $377 to your door. If there's no tax, that's $.37 a shot vs. $.50 for the UMC.

PMC is pretty good stuff by the way.

If you are planning this for defensive purposes other than plinking, you need to AT LEAST buy XM193/XM855 5.56 pressure rounds. Speed and bullet upset/fragmentation is the wounding mechanism of FMJ rounds.

Rounds that don't have the right construction and aren't going fast enough may not have the terminal performance that you are looking for.

Here is some good reading information:

http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=19881

If you are just using it for plinking/practicing, as long as it will cycle your gun and it is accurate enough for you to hit what you are aiming at, you are good enough.

Personally, I only run Commie ammo in Commie guns.

D-d-d-damn, Ok, some of those rounds are like $1-$1.25 per...

Do not see myself investing a grand in ammo anytime soon.

I may fill a few mags with some high dollar high power, probably will not pile any up though.

I asked in another thread, never got a response, how long should I be able to keep the magpul poly mags full without damage to the spring?

Nice, that is what i wanted to hear, glad I purchased 4 more..

I like this place.

Guns are a relatively new hobby to me, 12 hours a day on the laptop needs something to vent through, LOL, I guess posting about guns is not technically distracting me from the computer, however it gets me out of software development and to the range, so therapy in progress...

Thanks again all.

Yes, they are.

But you can just use XM193 or XM855 and get quite a bit of improvement in terminal performance of just straight .223 pressure FMJ rounds for not a lot if any more cost.

The most important things are annealed case shoulders, a cannelure where the case neck meets the cartridge (2 reasons it keeps the bullet from setting back in the case and it weakens the bullet so it is more likely to fragment when it tumbles), and is it accurate in your rifle at the ranges you might need to shoot it.

5.56 pressure is better than .223 pressure because the bullet is faster but the other things are more important in my opinion based on my research.

How about http://www.ammunitionstore.com/produ...round-box.html

That is more reasonable in price IMO, I could swing a couple hundred and save the UMC for the range.

And my S&W says both 5.56 and .223, so I assume I am safe either way

That is actually EXCELLENT ammo from what I have heard.

The latest generation of military rounds that was upgraded to improve penetration through glass for stopping guys driving cars without having to use a 7.62 X 51.

Keep in mind though, that it probably WILL punch through several internal walls.

I avoid using .223 in my AR's, it has lower pressures than 5.56 and can cause system operation issues.

Look around and you can find military grade, Lake City M193 5.56 in 1000 loose round boxes at .30 a round.

@Crow Hunter, yeah, I figured such things were not for close quarters, that was *why* I bought this weapon to begin with, to reach out and touch things. If I am shooting at anything indoors it would be the Sub. Hell after last weekend's shoot I am inclined to believe if I were to pull the trigger in my house it would blow out a window or two...

@madcratebuilder, just found some for $37 per 100, thanks, I will test some of these and see how they go.

Picked up four boxes of HPR 75 grain BTHP. $31 per 50.

They damn sure weigh more, I expect a different experience shooting them.

Any opinions?
