baffle for rcbs powder dump ?

I have read reference to a baffle for this powder dump what exactly is it and where would I buy one ? Have you guys made your own ?

I bought mine from Midway, or maybe MidSouth. Don't remember for sure. I thought about making my own, thought about it laughed about it then forgot about it. I was ordering something else anyway and just tossed the baffle in at the last minute. I don't know exactly how much use the things are, but I guess they help somewhat. Me I don't know.

Now that I've seen one, making one would be a piece of cake. All you need is the pattern, but I'd have to flatten mine out, scan it and I'm really not willing to do so. With my luck I'd never get it back together right.

I've got basically the same baffle in my Lyman 55. If something happened and I lost it, I'd simply cut another from a soda can.

Here's a link to an article about making a pattern someone posted a while back. Make one out of thin aluminum sheet you can buy at Home Depot or any hardware store:

I've got a PDF file of templates you can copy, too. Just scale between two for an odd size. You can do that in your printer setup.

As I understand it, the baffle is used to mitigate the effects of the weight of column of powder in the measure. Some powders will experience a difference in the amount of powder thrown as the height of the column of powder is reduced in the measure. A baffle serves to support the weight.

An alternate approach is to place a weight on top of the powder; such as, some washers or a piece of shaft.

Simple solutions are filling the measure more frequently or using a powder which isn't sensitive to weight variations. In my limited experience, the consistency I get with ball and stick powder is good enough to skip the baffle; however, it’s the flakes that get flakey and need a little help.

For what it worth, I have two Unflows (large and small cyls) with RCBS baffles and the baffles made no difference. I only fill half way and use ball powders. The idea sounded good but the results proved otherwise in my case.

I've used a Lyman 55, Lee Pro and also the RCBS. Never saw the need for baffles but maybe it's just related to a specific powder that I dont' use.

All I try to do is keep the hopper around 1/4 full and make sure I'm working the handle with the same force each time.

i just use a funnel that sets down a ways, put a washer on it to keep it stable. brass funnel, works for me for 40 year. cjs

I have a Uniflow and never thought I needed a baffle in it. I just keep it topped off.

Any measure works well with ball powders, the problem is with coarse tubular powders. Measure baffles are quite simple, there is no benefit to a fancy one. Perhaps the simplist is a folded business card placed in the bottom of the hopper.
