Looked in my Hornady book and found a SWC 180 gr. lead With WIN 231 it states starting load 3.8 gr for 750 fps, 4.3 gr for 800 fps, 4.7 gr 850 fps, 5.0 gr 900 fps, max is 5.7 gr 950 fps. C.O.L: 1.125" Hope this helps.

Disclaimer: There's no current load data available from Hodgdon for 40S&W lead bullets with W231/HP-38, so use the following at your own risk.

5.0 gr of W231 and 180 gr bullet will produce very stout/uncomfortable snappy recoil loads. For me, out of fullsize M&P40/Glock 22/27(with Lone Wolf barrels) and Missouri 180 gr TCFP bullet at 1.125" OAL, 3.8-4.1 gr of W231/HP-38 produced mild recoil and accurate loads. 4.2-4.5 gr produced moderate recoil and accurate loads. But depending on your barrel and how soon your rifling starts (leade length), you may need to use shorter OAL.

I use:
5 grains Hodgdon Universal, behind a Berry's 180 grain flat nose, round nose or hollow point.
coal @1.125"
Glock 23

Works for me.
