don't ask! I took her out two times to trap for me. I let her shoot my 20 gauge Weatherby. I think she liked it. She broke the first clay I threw her, then missed a boatload, then hit a few more. The gun was way too big for her. This little gem is the 20ga/22" Micro made specifically for youth and women with a 13-1/2" LOP. She's not home yet, but I hope to surprise her with it. It also doubles as a high quality HD gun with the right ammo!! Maybe she can carry it in the trunk of her Miata...

I think the BPS is a good gun ...and I hope she likes it ...and does some shooting.....with you !!

Pick up some light recoil loads for that new 20ga ....in 7/8 oz or maybe 3/4 oz if you can find it ...at 1150 fps .../ or reload them ...

Sure, I understand ...but its still a fixed breech gun .../ and as you know, recoil is cumulative ...and for new shooters ( with a light gun like this ) with a standard 7/8 oz 20ga shell at 1200 fps ....you might get more recoil than from an 8 1/2 lb 12ga ...

Adding or losing a pound of gross weight in the gun...means about 10- 15%more or less recoil ...with a given shell.

For my younger teenage granddaughters .../ they're plenty tough ..but they don't have a lot of upper body strength yet ...or the boys at that age for that matter. So I start all of the grandkids shooting my 28ga O/U at 7 1/2 lbs ...if they want to move up to a 20ga ( and they all want to move up as soon as they can !! ) ...even with the Benelli SuperSport 20ga ..I have to keep the shells at 1200 fps to cycle the gun / but I drop the loads down to 3/4 of an ounce.... For some of the younger kids ...I drop them down to 1150 fps or 1100 fps / even though they won't cycle the semi-auto shotgun ...it doesn't matter because I start them on singles anyway. Of course with a pump gun - you cycle the gun manually ...so lighter / is just better.

Of course I'm not fooling my wife ...the last 7 or 8 guns I bought ...were because I needed some more guns for the grandkids to shoot ...

/ she's not really that dumb ..but she tolerates me ...!!

I think the stock recoil pads are pretty good / but I think Kick-EEZ are better sure...

But before you change it ...check it for length of pull / fit at the heel / fit at the comb ....because you might need to do a number of things so it hits where she looks. All of the BPS - angled combs for me personally, have a lot of drop at the comb - so it recoils into my cheek bone ...not under it. So I have to raise the combs / with a stick on comb pad - or they beat me up. The lighter and shorter the model is - the worse it is for me...but that's just me.

Shotguns don't come in one size fits all ....and I'm 6'5" and 280 lbs ...and have been shooting for 50 yrs .../ but a short and light 20ga will still smack me around if it doesn't "Fit" me ....

Bottom line - get her / or reload her some real light loads ..she doesn't need more than 3/4 oz of shot anyway ...and 1150 fps is plenty fast enough for any sporting, trap or skeet targets ...( and personally, for a 20ga I stick with 8's in 7/8 oz or 3/4 oz ....although if she were going to only shoot skeet or 16 yd trap singles...I might load some 9's ...give her a few more pellets in the pattern.

use 40 grains for the wad and about 16 grains for the powder

If the gun weighs 7#, recoil is 15.56

Just dropping the speed to 1200 makes the recoil 13.26, a nice drop

Now, in my 12, using 18 for powder, 1200 fps and 8.25#, my recoil is 11.42, over 25% less

Just something to think about

Slugo, Even if you don't reload the same rules will govern felt recoil. I don't know if Fiochi is any good, but for an example it has a low recoil munitiion. http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/prod...ducts_id=89224 I imagine all the established ammunition companies have something similar.

Don't let her shoot any shell over 1200 fps / sell those shells or put them aside for yourself to shoot. Get her some more suitable shells to shoot ..

Last year I bought my wife a Weatherby SA-08 20ga youth synthetic for 399.

We go out and I'll shoot trap with her every other weekend. I am trying to move her into skeet.

oneounce, how do I use that calculator for regular 12 ga target loads to calculate recoil??

Slugo - just pointing out that velocity is even more of a factor in recoil than shot charge.

Get her the low velocity target/training loads, especially to start with. Factory loads from a wide variety of makers can fit the bill and a few flats won't be too hard $$$-wise and most likely last a long time.

Of course, if you REALLY loved her, you would have taken her on a trip to Italy where she could have been fitted for a nice Perazzi, maybe in 28 gauge........

Cool gun -- great choice (as long as the forearm reach isn't too long -- watch for that and see if she struggles as that forearm is not forgiving in this regard).

There is no ejection port... They needed more surface to etch!

Aren't the Wally World sport sleeves of 100 rounds in 20 ga. 7/8 ounce 1,200 FPS? Somebody here knows!

I searched but I'll be damned if I can find it on the net and suffice it to say I can't reach any here.

Remington makes an excellent reduced recoil STS load in 20 gauge.

If you replace the pad, check out the Kick Eeze "Rocker" pad. The toe is rounded making it more female friendly.

Slugo, try a sleeve of the light and then move her to the (I amaze myself) 7/8th ounce - 1,200 fps sport packs that I am confident the big-three ALL make for Wally World. She'll be fine with that once she gets used to a (albeit fancy-shmancy) gun in general.

Really, just keep an eye on that forearm reach.

PS: is 13-1/2" REALLY that short (youth/women)?
