Steel shot in an old single shot?

I'm considering adding an older break-action single shot 12 gauge to my collection. I found an Ithaca M66 in good shape at my LGS, but I'm wondering:

Can these older guns handle the pressure of magnum steel shot loads? I'm looking for something inexpensive to keep in the closet for occasional hunting trips and such and I want to make sure I don't blow the thing up.

The receiver says it takes 3" shells, but will it stand up to a modern, magnum goose or turkey load?

Also, I realize a heavy load will probably kick the snot out of me in a light gun like that.

Thanks,

M. Z.

The problem is the choke. If it's too tight, it's not safe to fire steel shot through it.

What choke does it have?

I'm pretty sure it's a full choke.

You probably want to limit yourself to lead shot with a full choke.

I've also read that the barrel will bulge but be safe to use ongoing in any case...

Interesting to note that there were memos from the biggest gun companies who supported the law against lead for waterfowl knowing that there was no scientific foundation in it becasue they'd get a whole new market of new shotgun buyers. Remington, etc., sold us out.
