nickel chipping?

I have in my safe (which I and I alone know the combination to) a Norinco 1911a1 which I had nickel plated about 20 years ago;

Last time I looked at it it was flawless. That was about 6 months ago.

Last night, for no particular reason, I decided to visit my firearms.

When I pulled out the Norc, (which was in a Nylon holster) I noticed a chip right at the bottom of the grip, back side, about 1/8th inch of nickel missing.

I KNOW this firearm was not dropped, or handled by anyone in the interim.

What could be happening?

Will this "cancer" spread?

What oil is on the gun?

Have you used any copper solvent type cleaners?

One of the things about plating is that the surface must be chemically clean [not just soap and water clean] . If it isn't clean then the plating doesn't bond to the base metal and it will eventually peel off. It's hard to say what the rest of the plating is like. Corrosion , rust, has a tendency to work under the plating and peel more. Keep the gun coated with a good rust inhibitor ,something like RIG.
And Watson , bring your revolver !

I assume the Norinco has an investment cast frame and I don't know what alloy they used? I've seen some castings you just couldn't get plating to adhere well to, but others that had no problem with it.
