Why does every one hate the XD grip safety

It seems like thats a big grip about the XD. I personally dont even notice it and I like the face that there can be an extra built in safety that automaticaly goes off when you grip the gun. Its not uncomfortable for me, like I said I never remember its there.

I don't know really....I don't mind it. If you have a 1911 or love the 1911 I don't see why you'd not like it...Maybe cause it's a polymer gun? I don't know. Anyways, I do not mind it or even notice it at all. It's a great gun, I just got mine days ago. XD45, shot approx 500rds to break it in. Awesome gun.

I don't notice it at all. My 1911's have it, so maybe if someone hasn't had that system before it would be different.

Reasons/excuses are aplenty:
1. It's one more item that can break.
2. Not holding the gun correctly will not allow the gun to fire.
3. Some just HAVE to find something to grip about the XD.

I can go on. Me, personally, I don't even know it's there...

Yep, needing something to gripe about. I have never had a problem with one.

I don't hate it. It's just kinda of like a extra ear lobe. Unnecessary.

Ive never owned an xd, but I notice there seem to be very few PDs that use the XD. I cant think of why this would be aside from the grip safety. Maybe with thick gloves on it could be an issue.

The ones I hear the most

- One-handed reloading/clearance

- Some thing extra that can go wrong

Usually the first one is why trainer/consultant types tell organizations not to T&E them, even though I don't see how the grip safety would make any difference the way I've always trained.

The second one is most common and it's usually just some thing to throw out there as a reason to not like/try an XD.

I have no issues with mine. I've never been conscious of it when shooting, ever.

Well, I don't dislike it. It doesn't bother me. But I will say that I don't see the point of it. The Glock has the same kind of trigger and no grip safety, and it is an extremely popular seller. Sometimes I think they did it just to differentiate themselves from Glock. Like I said, I don't mind it. I just don't know why they bothered.

Has anyone ever heard of it breaking or causing a problem? I would venture to say that most people griping about it would complain about anything. I have had mine for 6 years and shot plenty of rounds through it and have never really noticed it being there.

I don't dislike it at all. I do not have an XD, but I have spent some range time with the XD on more than one occasion and came away liking it quite a bit.

for me it's not a deal breaker but I prefer simplicity and it's not necessary IMHO. the XD/XDm series are good guns though and I wouldn't hesitate to carry one.

I recently purchased a handgun and the XD was one of the guns I evaluated at the range. The grip safety was a show stopper for me. I have very large (long) hands and had to frequently adjust my grip to positively disengage the safety. The XD is a fine handgun, just didn't work for me. I ended up buying a Sig P226.

I would think having larger hands would help...hmm.

that's why you see a lot of 1911s with "speed bumps" on the grip safety. springfield should probably make them larger to ensure positive engagement.

I believe the reason many 1911's have speed bumps is also the reason many of them have front cocking serrations and FLGR's. It's all about the show, not the go. I personally hate a speed bump on 1911 grip safety because I don't like the way it presses into my hand. I find them completely useless, and much prefer the bumpless ones.

While I don't own an XD, and probably never will, the grip safety is not a problem. I don't even notice them on my 1911's, and I doubt it would be any different with an XD. Personally I kinda like the idea of them, as they could possibly stop a gun from firing in the middle of a struggle if no one has a decent grip on it.

I don't mind the safety grip on my XD. Then again it's my first gun so I really don't know anything else.

I understand people's reasoning for not liking it. It seems kinda pointless but at the same time I don't mind it. Some instances I like it. Like when moving it to/from my safe. I always have the gun holstered but you never know when it might slip out or something stupid happens. Guess that extra step doesn't hurt.

Which would be a terrible thing if you were the one trying to fire it to save your life...

I'm not really sold one way or the other on grip safeties--just pointing out that anything that keeps a gun from shooting when you pull the trigger can be either good or bad depending on the circumstances.

I don't see how anyone can grab a gun insufficiently enough to not engage that safety. 1911's have been with them for 100 years. Still strong.

So you disagree with Auto426 who claimed that grasping the gun without a decent grip during a struggle would prevent it from firing?

I think this helps you more than it can hurt you. How else does one fire a gun?
