good finish for wood stock?

anyone have advice on a good finish for wood stocks on a rifle?
i have done a few,one with lacquer spray(deft),rockhard varnish(brush on),
and spray poly.
the rock hard seem the best,but was too thick to put in a gun and thinning was not advised(brush on only). i liked the lacquer but was unsure of protection from
gun cleaning products,which is my main consern.

This subject has been up recently. Use the search tool and you'll find some within the last month or two detailing oil finishes, including the antique finishes Brownells sells, tung oil, and application techniques and dewhiskering before finishing, and so on. Here's one thread that's an example.

When it doubt, Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil is a good, serviceable fallback.
