quick question

i am loading some 30-30 rounds using lee reloading dies. My question is can i use rcbs #2 shell holder for this or do i have to get the lee shell holder #3. Thought i had the #3 holder in lee but i was wrong. Is there a difference?

As long as the shell holder is of the proper dimensions to hold the cartridge you're reloading and to fit in the ram of the press you're using, interchanging by manufacturer is fine.

There are some proprietary shell holders for some equipment, such as the Lee hand priming tool, but the ones made for press use are pretty much universal.

I frequently use RCBS shell holders in my Lee Classic Cast Turret when loading .38 Spl. and .357 Magnum.

The numbers are RCBS are not the same as Lee or other brands of shell holders, if that is what you are asking. If my memory is correct, the RCBS #2 shell holder is for cartridges of the 30-06 family and therefore would not fit the 30-30 Winchester casing.

Here's a link to a shell holder equivalence table:

http://www.darkcanyon.net/shellholdertable.html

For .30-30, Lee uses #3, Lyman uses #6, while all the other brands use #2.

The only "Gotcha" is that the height of the shellholder (from where the case sits...to the surface that meets the die, may be different) That only means you may have to adjust your die down or up to reflect that difference...to get the same shoulder "bump" you may have adjusted the die for in previous sessions.

RCBS number 2 shell holder is used for 30/30 & 307 rimmed cases, RCBS number 3 is used for 30/06 & 308 class of cases. GWS is correct about shell holder height varying from manufacture to manufacture, that's why I use only RCBS shell holders. William
