DuraCoat is supposed to be applied to clean, sandblasted metal. That said, there are a lot of DuraCoated guns out there that were just sprayed right over the bluing. If you want to do it right, either sand and grain the metal, or sandblast it. It works best to apply it directly to clean metal.

The couple times i've used duracoat I just went right over the bluing. I just used duracoats trustrip and roughed it up with a scotch pad, and that did lighten up the bluing some. Seemed like it turned out fine for me.

Duracoat will bite into certain finishes. Anodizing, and Parkerizing do not require removal.

I *think* you can apply duracoat over bluing as well, but you may have to "rough up" the finish a little to give it something to bite to.

Call Lauer Weaponry to find out for sure. They'll know.

All of this basically comes out in variations of the same place. The surface needs to have a little "tooth" to provide good adhesion for any coating-type finish. The only difference between blasting and using something like a Scotch-Brite pad is the degree of texturing the surface.

When i DuraCoat blued finishes i rough it up with some 600 grit sand paper. The integrity of your finish REALLY depends on your surface prep.

Yes, which also includes (just for the sake of completeness) total degreasing.
