S&W Model 908 Field Strip

I am having a hard time finding a field strip guide online for my S&W Model 908. I have never field stripped a gun and need a good tutorial.

You can download them from S&W's website. Check customer service, then product manuals. I think you can download and requests a hardcopy via snail mail. Note your manual may not be directly available as the "908" might be called something like "metal framed centerfire autos".

Field stripping the older S&W auto designs is straight forward.
  1. Remove the magazine and unload the pistol.
  2. Fully retract the slide and verify it is unloaded.
  3. Set the safety to "fire" position.
  4. Pull the slide backwards until the slide stop notch in the left side of the slide is aligned with the forward, rounded portion of the slide stop.
  5. From the right side, push inward on the slide-stop pin until it rises up on the left side of the frame.
  6. Remove the slide stop from the frame by pulling straight out.
  7. Ease the slide to move forward. The hammer will fall as
the slide moves forward (SA/DA Pistols).
  8. Pull the slide forward off the frame while grasping the recoil spring assembly and slide together.
  9. Invert the slide so the recoil spring is up. Note where the recoil spring mounts on the barrel underlug.
  10. Carefully remove the recoil spring & guide rod by comressing the spring slightly and releasing it carefully from the small radial cut in the barrel lug.
  11. Remove the barrel bushing (if equipped with one) by turning the bushing and removing from the front of the slide.
  12. Lift the barrel out from the rear for cleaning.

Reassembly is in reverse order.
During reassembly, the hammer should be forward (down) and the safety/decocker should be in the "Fire" position. If you have to lower the hammer, use your thumb to lower it gently to the resting position.

Always check the gun for proper functioning after reassembly.

The only "tricky" part is centering the recoil spring guide rod in the radial cut in the barrel lug. If you do it properly the recoil spring guide rod should not protrude from the front of the slide. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get it set right. Be careful with the recoil spring & guide rod as it can cause injury if it springs free suddenly.

For the generic manual for all S&W metal framed autos, download this PDF file from S&W.

Well done on the instructions. Yep, that's the way they work. Cool gun, by the way. Let us know how she shoots.
