Why is the 1911 such a popular gun in the US?

Why do you think the 1911 style pistol is so popular in the US?

Great design, cheap easy to find ammo, proven reliability, lots of spare parts, accurate. And because of the military history.

Effectiveness, nostalga... somewhat of a "cool" factor.

Nothing looks better than a spruced-up 1911.

Alot of the same reasons people still carry revolvers even tho there are more combat effective platforms available now. You're not likely to ever have to actually fight with it, but you have to carry it, look at it and care for it every day. A nice looking gun, one that you think is "neat" and enjoy having is a plus on that.

I'm actually thinking about switching back to a revolver myself for just these reasons.

I'll cast my vote for the trigger design.

It's straight back and very "tweek-able".

A significant number of bullseye shooters compete with 1911's for this reason.

It was a revolution!!!! An Evolution of Auto Pistols!!!!!!
It was ART!!!!!
The 1911 pistol is so popular is because it is a proven design, mass produced when they were first introduced as a military surplus gun. Just like why is AKs so popular, same answer. Reliable, and they are just awesome!

I have to say it's not my favorite auto-loader

but I bought one last year as was amazed at how it feels and shoots. Is a different kind of animal for sure. I think with most folks you would either love or hate it. I ended up offered another one a month later and couldn't turn it down....
I like to carry standard 9mm with hig capacity mags during the day. But a 1911 sits beside my bed at night.

Anybody that 'collects' handguns and specifically auto-loaders has to have at least one 1911 in my opinion.

I like 1911s for the following reasons (in no particular order):

1) Colt makes them
2) They served reliably in at least 5 armed conflicts the US was involved in
3) Their slim profile makes concealing 1911s easy
4) It is commonly chambered in .45
5) It points naturally
6) The trigger pull is light, short and crisp
7) It is a good, time-proven design
8) They look good (even if they are not intended to)
9) There is nothing quite like being able to say you own a Colt 1911 in .45
10) It has a great history (see #2)
11) Follow-up shots are quick and easy due to light, short trigger pull
12) I could go on, but I will leave the list as is...

No offense intended,,,but,,if you have to ask,,,,then you probably won't understand the reasons.

For example. It's a little after 7:00am Saturday morning right now. About a half hour ago, the little peanut dog started in with her "there's someting not right" bark, and woke me up out of a half sleep.

I can think of few other things that gave me the warm fuzzy's that the Kimber I slid out from under the bed did.

It may seem cliche to say "priceless",,,but,,that pretty much sums up the feeling of confidence a 1911/8 rounds of 230 grain instills.

"Plus they cant give them away out of the US so they best sell all they can here too".

I rode in a cab in Frankfurt with an Italian driver and he struck up a conversation about guns because I'm an American and every European just knows all Americans love guns He had a customized 1911 that he had more than a few bucks in and he wanted it because of it's history, it's looks and he liked the way it shot. Pretty much the same reasons we love it so much. That was one of the most enjoyable cab rides I've ever had.

Thanks, I needed a laugh today. Have you actually tried giving one away overseas and been turned down?

The 1911 is an interesting bird. It, IMHO, is the second best "system" behind the H&K P7. When executed correctly, the 1911 is a nearly perfect combat auto pistol.

Here are a few reasons...

1. It is ergonomically excellent, and very flexible. You can make a 1911 fit your hand, period. All the grip inserts that are the rage in modern autopistols are attempts to make up ground that the 1911 covered decades ago.

Further, the placement of the safety is perfect. Other designs, like the H&K USP, just don't seem as well thought out. This isn't just a matter of preferring what I am used to. I have shot and more often carry H&K USPs than 1911s (for reliability reasons) but the safety switch is simply not as well positioned for smooth deactivation.

2. The trigger can be made perfect. I mean perfect. A tuned 1911 trigger puts everything else (other than some dedicated target rimfires) to shame.

3. It is the .45. I am not a drinker of the kool-aid in the .45 vs. 9mm wars. However, no one can really argue that the .45 isn't an excellent man-stopper. You like big fat slow bullets? Look no further. Do you like fast medium weight bullets? Well, you can have that too.

4. The .45 can be personalized to a degree that no other gun can even approach. There are a hundred variations, I would venture, of every part in the 1911. This personalization can help make the gun seem less like a tool and more a part of yourself. I know it sounds goofy, but a gun is a hell of a lot better friend than a pet rock!

5. Accuracy. A 1911 can be made more accurate than humans can reasonably utilize, or damn close.

6. History. The 1911 is a known quantity. You can buy one and be assured that parts, gunsmiths, and accessories will be available as long as citizens are free to arm themselves.

because it's American made/designed gun

Other than 1911 what other guns are made is US? Rugers? Berettas, Sigs, Glocks, CZs, HKs, etc are all European designs...

same reason why .45acp is popular in US

1911

Simple nononsense design that is durable and reliable, with a great single action trigger that enhances accuracy and is easily tuned. Finally, it's chambered for a powerful, accurate and controllable caliber.

Because John Browing was a genius and designed a handgun way ahead of its time. Funny how so many different gun manufacturers have since taken the 1911 design concept and incorporated it into their own designs. It's simplicity and perfection rolled up into a timeless design. Guns will come and go but the 1911 will live on.

Yes... and tried to compete with it and fell short in one way or another.

While many hands fit several guns, more different people, with different sized hands, can hold a 1911 and be more accurate with it than with any other "off the shelf" handgun. It just fits better...

Because they feel great in the hand.

Because of the great ergonomics.

Because they are an all steel .45 that is about the sweetest shooter of any platform I've tried. I hear the HK P7 is a sweet shooter, but they're not common enough to have as a range rental to try.

Because of the great trigger.

Because there's a new 1911 avaliable at your pricepoint, no matter what that pricepoint may be.

Because of the history and tried and true effectiveness.

Because of the almost limitless custom options, many of which can be competently fitted by even a novice shooter.

And etc...

I believed after shooting a couple 1911s from different manufacturers and finding them all great shooters.

Another happy owner.
