Speed Up

What is the maximum velocity a projectile can reach when launched from a shotgun? I have 12g 1oz slugs that run at 1600 fps, but I would be interested in knowing if anyone has ever tried to push the muzzle velocity closer to 2000 fps. Would the slug travel faster if I reduced the weight to around 3/4 oz, and would all the powder burn?

Shotgun design is based on fairly low pressures. Few loads hit 20,000,if any, centerfire rifle loads oft run over 50,000.

Reducing the slug weight might aid velocity, but with a serious loss in momentum and penetration.

And,after around 40 years of shooting standard slugs,I've never seen a deer able to tell the difference between the 2 3/4 slug and its higher priced,harder kicking 3 inch relative...

Just bought Guns & Ammo Jan 2000, and there on page 80 in the 'new for 2000' section is this:

Heavyweight from Hornady: The Heavy Mag H2K shotgun slug features a Hornady 300-grain XTP Mag bullet that will essentially turn your shotgun into a .45-70 rifle. The load comes in 2 3/4 inch persuasion only and boasts a muzzle velocity of 2,664 foot-pounds. The XTP acronym, incidentally, stands for Extreme Terminal Performance, and that appears to be what this item is all about. With a 150 yard zero from a 30-inch barrel, the drop at 200 yards is 6.54 inches.

Interesting...

This surpasses 45-70 performance, the last time I had a 45-70 I used that Hornaday bullet at around 1850 FPS out of a 28" bbl.

However, I'll stick with my Forster style slugs, they work well as I use them...
