Red dot site selection for Ruger MKIII gov. Target
I know this has probably been previously discussed but I could use some fresh help. I just purchased a new Ruger MKIII government target .22 pistol in SS. It has the 5 1/2"'bull barrel. I'm thinking I want to put either an Ultradot or Burris fastfire 2 on it. While the idea of maybe trying some bullseye shoots with it is appealing, most likely I will use it mainly for plinking, general target shooting, and varmint hunting (ground squirrels). Which site would you recommend. If I go with an ultradot, should I pick the ultradot 25 1"'tube or the ultradot match with the 30" tube. I'm somewhat concerned the 30mm with overwhelm the gun but I heard the field of view is better. Thoughts?
Also, I'll need to know the recommended rings (I've read weaver horizontal rings are better for removal without changing point of impact). I plan to use the weaver base that came with the pistol unless someone has a good reason not to. Also, any holster suggestions for (for hiking vs. Speed competition) and is it worth getting a trigger kit and new grips? Thanks! |

Get the Ultradot 30. You won't be sorry. It comes with rings and they are fine for a .22. Holsters I don't know. You would have to modify one to use the Ultradot. I would just carry it in a range bag or backpack. I have the Ultradot 25 on my Buck Mark but I wish now I had gotten the 30. Neither will over power the looks of the gun. Use the rib that comes on the pistol. It will be fine.
A relative of mine and a close friend have both had problems with the Fastfire sights. I had better luck with a cheap BSA sight. |

I can think of no reason to mount a big bulky tubular type red dot on a .22 pistol. I would mount the FastFireII on the Ruger in a heart beat. (oh wait, I already tried that....worked great!)
I have a different upper on my Ruger Mark1 and it has a Picatinny rail on it (along with iron sights) so I didn't have to deal with rings, bases, etc. The FastFireII went right on. I liked the compact footprint it provided. |
