Gun Rest/Vise
I need to test fire a Mauser rifle. Not sure of the caliber. Chamber cast shows it to be most likely an 8x60S but I want to set it up in a vise and back away using a wire. What vise works best for this?

You could get a lead sled and ducktape or zip tie it in

The way I've seen it done is to strap the padded rifle to an old tire. Butt slips down inside tire against the edge & forend over the top. The idea is that the tire absorbs the recoil & can move some to avoid damaging the rifle. Use a long string!

The tire idea works real well.
A vice could break something, and what bench rest shooters use is expensive.

Before you wreck something, would you entertain the idea of getting the book 'Cartridges of the World' and measuring and comparing to specifically determine the correct ctg for that rifle?
I may be wrong, and I sure don't intend to offend you, but judging by your OP- it doesn't sound like you researched or measured very diligently at all.
