Have you reached 1,000,000 rounds?
Just curious, any TFL'ers fired 1 million rounds down the barrel (hand held weapons only)? If so over how many years and what weapons?

Now I shoot about 20,000 handgun rounds a year but long ago I managed 100,000 a year for awhile (22's mostly) so I'm sure in over 50 years of shooting I've done it.

Over 13,000 rounds a year for 75 years? Very few people can make that claim. Very few.

On good years (when money's good and the bills aren't super high) I can manage 10,000+ rounds a year. This year isn't one of those years.
Anyway I do shoot a lot compared to others in my area however I honestly don't think that I've hit the 1 million round mark. In fact I think its going to be a lot of years before I hit that. I mean I've only been shooting at this relative volume for the last 10 or so years. Prior to that I shot as much as I could afford to but it was far less than 10,000+ a year although still more than a couple thousand a year. I'm envious of the people who could afford to shoot enough that they hit the 1 million round mark and/or surpass that.

Well yeah but I was competing and I have been shooting for a long time. This 22 easily has well over 400,000 rounds. I had to change the barrel once because I didn't know about snap caps back then and ruined the first barrel dry firing. Most of the ammo used was Remington Green box, standard velocity ammo and until the ammo quality went down hill I never had any reason to shoot anything else in it. Besides targets it has taken jack rabbits, squirrels and a lot of pigeons.
This 45 conservative estimate 300,000 rounds and about 10 years ago I had to change the barrel and bushing in it, since 1972 the rear sights 4 times, the link pin once and the recoil spring more times than I can remember. It helped that the army was buying all my ammo at the time. Now that I have to buy or make my own and I am not competing it doesn't get shot nearly as much. First gun I ever bought back in 1964 and I am guessing that I passed the million round mark over 20 years ago. I personally don't shoot it as much as I used to but it still shoots and it is still the gun I use to train new shooters who do not have their own gun. I shot this 25 yard target about a year ago to prove to my latest student, my nephew, that it wasn't the guns fault he was missing.

I doubt I've even made it to 2,000 rounds in the couple years I've been shooting.

I've been shooting since the age of seven and I'm now sixty eight.
I don't believe I'm anywhere close to the one million mark. |

Lets do the math here,,,
Lets do the math here,,,
I've been shooting since I was 10 years old,,, 60 minus 10 equals 50 years. 50 years times 365 days per year (ignoring leap years) equals 18,250 days,,, 1,000,000 rounds divided by 18,250 days (rounding up) equates to 55 rounds a day. That means I would have had to shoot just over a box of ammo each day for 50 years straight. Nope,,, I'm nowhere close to a million rounds. Aarond .

Aarond,
You could have gotten to 1,000,000 by shooting 385 rounds every Saturday for thos 50 years! (Hope you didn't miss any Saturdays!)

Probably not, but may be getting close. I'm certain there's well over 200K through one 22 revolver, more likely 300K. Was shooting 500-1000 rds most weekends for a long time. Was buying a case of 2500 rds a month for one gun for a while. Started about 40-some years ago.
Edit: Upon further consideration, I would downgrade my count to the 500-700K range. Probably wont make it to the million mark at this rate, I've slowed down considerably of late.

No idea. Keeping track of such stats has never crossed my mind before.
I do know, however, that my One Day Record is 2,000 rounds. |

My wife would probably think I have reached it, but no I haven't. Most people will probably never see that much shooting in their lives.
But now I have a goal. A man's got to have a goal in life. |

Many years ago we used to have an annual allotment of ammo for training. If any was turned back in then your allotment for the following year was reduced. I spent several days on the range a couple of times a year with the other gunners in the battalion feeding ammo through M60's and M2's as fast as we could. Many times we would be sitting on a stool with the gun on the tripod just swinging it back and forth between our knees. Assuming an average of a half hour of shooting time for every hour spent on the range, at 600 RPM that works out to about 18,000 rounds per hour, at least 100,000 per day. I wouldn't be surprised if I shot up 10 million rounds.
Since then, I've probably averaged at least 1,000 per month (that I had to buy - not Uncle Sam!) for the past 40 years, that works out to about 500,000. |

I may have fired 100,000 rounds in my forty years of shooting.
I remember getting into it with a guy on another forum, who claimed he shot something like 25,000 rounds a year, for thirty years running, and had never had a mechanical malfunction of any kind, with any of his weapons. That's when I started thinking about how many rounds I'd ever fired, and while I may have topped 5,000 per year, two or three times, there were plenty of years that I didn't shoot 100 (and probably still had a malfunction ). |
