A light sanding and a coat of flat black paint should get you fixed right up. A friend did this on a beater gun and used flat black lacquer. Looked exactly like synthetic.

Brownells is a gunsmith supply company that has just about anything you can think of and more. In particular, a black paint that dries to a sort of non-slip surface which is ideal for what you want too do. Log onto: http://www.brownels.com and order a copy of their latest catlog.

I've used an ebony stain to get the wood ebony black, then refinished it with a Tru oil type finish. It was beautiful because the grain still showed, but had that black "tactical" look that I craved in the waning days of my youth. I'm going back to natural wood in my incipient middle age.

Minwax makes a stain that will get your stocks pretty black without having that "painty" look

PS: Yes, you'll have to remove the original finish. Some say that Remingtons finish won't come off with regular paint remover...I've never had that problem, Jasco worked on my factory finish. Steam or boil out the dents, then go to
