what type percussion cap?

hello all , I got this black powder gun 20+years ago (been a wall hanger) and have decided to put the musket back into service..its a 1864 Springfield that at some point became a conversion to a cartridge gun and then back, it has a numrich arms repro barrel , seems to be very "solid", took it apart cleaned it all up, but can't seem to find primers for it, the #11's the gunshop showed me are way too small and look more to fit the cap and ball revolvers and modern BP's, looking for the 'winged" musket caps any help appreciated,,thanks!

Howdy Rayz nice to see you Graced us here with your very first thread.

Musket caps are a little hard to come by. But if you have a good sporting goods store in your area perhaps its owner can order in a couple tins in for you.There not cheap anymore. I bought 2/ tins last Fall and at that time a tin was near 9.00 bucks. If you have to order from out Sate. There's that extra nasty Hazmat shipping charge. So if it were me I would look around locally first for some help in purchasing.

You will probably have to ask them to order them for you as they not a usual shelf item in most stores.

Stay away from CCI reenactors caps.

I have had no problems with CCI Reenactor caps on either my P1853 Enfield nor my Richmond Carbine.

I usually shoot Dynamit Nobel caps, but when I run out the local gun store only carries the CCI caps.

Only thing around here is CCIs. Can't say I ever had any trouble with them yet. I found some that I forgot about and they still went bag.

Sportsman Warehouse offers RWS musket caps. There suppose to be pretty good aren't they Hawg?

RWS is good as well as standard CCI but the reenactor caps are weak.

Yup Hawg I see what you mean once read up on the subject. Good thing I don't live all that far from TOTW. I suppose if the CCI's can't be trusted in the field. I'll have to use them up in target practice. Oh well better to know now than be up in a Deer Stand swearing up a storm latter this Fall. Thanks, for posting the links.

Now that I think on it, I have had two misfires with CCI reenactor caps. But this was immediately after cleaning on the range so I assumed I had cleaning juice in the bolster.

But with a dry barrel, I've never had a problem with them.

Why don't you just put a nipple in it for no. 11 caps?

Interesting idea.

I'm not sure if #11 caps have enough bang to set off muskets like musket caps do. Musket caps are quite a bit bigger.

They might also be a bit more fiddly to cap during competition. This has been a criticism against the "wingless" musket caps.

Since 1972 and never had a problem. But what do I know. Here is a picture
I took of a regular CCI no. 11 cap being fired. If this won't fire your musket,
You got a problem. As far as fidleing with them with your fingers, ever hear
Of a device called a capper? Wonder how the boys cap. Their revolvers?

kwhi43 you're probably right, but I took the #11s off my Perdersoli double 10 gauge and put musket nipples on. Had a few misfires with the #11s, probably because I was loading and shooting fast and didn't take much time to clear the fouling. The musket caps blow right through the gunk. I'll never go back to the #11s, unless I can't get musket caps..

Cappers are not allowed for long arms in N-SSA competition. They are allowed for revolvers, but that is not what is currently under discussion.
