Curios that aren't relics?
So, what kind of curios that aren't relics does everyone have?
For instance, neither my S&W Model 53 nor my Model 544 (Texas Wagon Train Commemorative) is anywhere near 50 years old, but both are on the C&R list. |

Aren't some of the SKS's curios but not relics (>50 years old)?
I also read somewhere (admittedly hearsay) that some of the Eastern Bloc weapons qualify as curios because their countries of origin no longer exist. |

Curios Not Relics
Theres a huge list of shortbarrelled rifles that are Curios. Also, I believe all or nearly all of the Winchester Commemoratives are on the list, though none of them are 50 years old, so must have been classified as Curios. The list is posted on the BATFE website without comment on why each is listed.

Before the 50-year-old ruling, items were added to the C&R list only because someone requested it.
Some history. Prior to GCA 68, anyone could ship a gun interstate to anyone else. When GCA 68 was proposed, it initially banned interstate shipment except to dealers. But a lot of high ticket collectors, many of them big political donors, wanted to keep shipping collector guns around the collector community without having to go through dealers. So Congress created the collector license to allow interstate transfer of collector (curio or relic) firearms among collectors. So a collector, having obtained some collectible or unusual gun(s), would ask BATFE (or its predecessors) for a C&R designation. Then he could transfer the gun(s) interstate to other collectors without the trouble of using a dealer. Jim |

All Colt Woodsman .22's are C&R. Colt stopped production in 1977 or so.
