Should a red dot be mounted on a .22 auto (MK I) further from the eye or closer to the eye?

By my measure, further as much as your base will allow. It's your on the RedDot as I prefer a scope with illuminated reticles. .....

The distance from the sight to the eye is of no significance. It's mostly about the balance on the gun and what type of shooting you'll be doing. If plate shooting, you want the gun to swing without having the muzzle causing the gun to pivot at the end of the swing. It's more about where the weight's distributed.

The distance to the sight for pistols is far enough that the actual location would only matter if you have some personal eye sight problem.
Otherwise, the balance of the gun with the scope would be the important consideration.
P.S.
An additional consideration might be if the scope interferes with ejection.
But Rugers don't seem to suffer from that.
It's worth checking though.

Usually I mount mine pretty far forward.

further away the less in your field of vision it takes up.
You shoot a red dot with both eye's open so you just need to see the red dot, you don't need it right up on your eye like a scope.

But this is just my personal preference.

Now things might be different if you use a magnifier, im not sure, I don't have one.

My first red dot was a 50mm.. pretty damn big.. I now prefer smaller red dots.
Move it along the rail and see what works best for you.
A proper red dot won't have any parallax.. or extremely little, so you can move it to where ever is comfortable for you.

Thanks for the feedback. I should have mentioned that due to medical problems I use my left eye though firing with my dominate right hand.

The weight balancing with the dot makes a lot of sense.

BTW I shoot PPC with this gun.

Have you tried it out in broad daylight yet?
Only red dot I got is a cheapy that fits 3/8" dovetail on a semi auto. Great at the indoor range, absolutely useless outdoors.

Double check it's visibility in all light conditions before the shtf.
