I like my Marlin 60 over my 10/22; more accurate without the need to completely replace every part

S&W AR-22 (my name for it). Wonderful with silencer and red dot sight.

Very light weight (mostly plastic). Accurate as heck.

Why does it have to be made today???

There are millions upon millions of good semi autos made in the past century (and some even before) along with millions of rifles that aren't as good.

Some of the "cheap" ones can be surprising, If you're looking for a match grade gun, then open your wallet, but if you just want a good gun that shoots pretty well, there are lots and lots and lots on the used racks. Along with the crap. Roll the dice, you might come up a winner. If not, put it back up for sale...

Yes. Tons of them.

As 44AMP says “why made today?” But I will put out that the Browning SA22 is one of the most beautiful rifles ever made. Still made, although I would rather own an old one.

CZ comes to mind

And so does the Plinkster. With $100 and a little know how, it’s not bad at all for something to keep up at the cabin.

What's your budget?

A Kidd supergrade immediately comes to mind, if you're planning on using a scope.

There are plenty of others.

A higher quality 10/22 clone, made in Canada by Dlask Arms.

What are you referring to?

I'm referring to two things, one, actual match rifles (which are usually not semi autos, so not directly on topic in this thread) but mostly #2, which is people spending $$ on barrels, trigger groups, stocks, etc, sometimes to the point of spending more on "upgrades" than on the original rifle.

Its their money, not mine, so it doesn't bother me much, other than when I hear someone listing the $$ cost for a virtual rebuild of the rifle, without ever having shot it in its original configuration.

How accurate does it need to be? Accuracy is the size of the largest groups fired.

There are hundreds of good semis in used racks. It use to be if gun didn’t shoot company made it right. Rem 550, 241- Win 63, 74, 77,- Sav 187 list goes on and on. Most of these rifles will put new ones to shame. The early 10/22 weren’t shabby either until the Bean Counters got into them. Just get a old Shooters Bible from 1960s and look at 22 rifles. The models were like snow flakes. This didn’t count store branded guns made by major companies.

What do you mean by "good ones?

Are you you wanting to use it for, plinking, hunting, or target?

Yes there are LOTS of good options. Some are a LOT more expensive than others it really depends on what you are trying to use it for and what "good" means to you.

Why no Rugers? I've owned several over the years and they were all pretty good.

I had a Marlin Glenfield that was pretty good too. Regret selling it.

Magnum Research, Bergara, Tactical Solutions, Marlin, Mossberg, Browning. Those are all pretty darn good.

If you want a match grade 10/22 style, there are lots of options. I have a TacSol action in a PMACA chassis with a Kidd barrel. Sub 1" 100 groups with reasonable cost sub-sonics. Get into the match grade ammo and I have shot it to 0.3" at 100 yards indoors. Those are 5 shot groups. Cost was in the $850 range complete.

The 10/22 is a very good rifle, all it needs is a trigger job and a scope. You can do a DIY trigger job for free. You can customize it if you wish but it is not necessary. I have 4 of them, 3 still have the stock bbls on them. They shoot just fine. I did put old walnut stocks on 2 of them that came with the standard beech stocks. The Marlin is a great rifle, it will still need a trigger job, and a scope and by the way, none being built today as Marlin is gone.

CZ 512, ... better than a Ruger 10/22 by a really long country mile.

Purpose of the rifle?

If emergency use I might suggest a Henry US Survival AR-7. Light-weight, take-down, and might even float if dropped in water when assembled.

AR-22, AR-15 pattern .22 by several makers.
