M1a roller / no roller

I always thought that the commercial Springfield M1As had a roller on the bolt, in the fashion of the M14.

Much to my surprise, my SOCOM 16" bolt looks lots like my Garand bolts.

When did they change the design?

---> Perhaps they thought they din't need the roller on a semi auto?

---> Is there a downside to no roller?

I can not find even a trace of this information on the Springfield site, which i deem "bewildering."

tanks.

What do you mean my rollers? Like roller delayed blowback system? If that is the case the M1a Is a piston operated gas system, no roller delayed. I always understood the M1a bolt to be an almost identical copy of the garand.

Almost, but not quite.

The M14 bolt has a roller bearing where it engages the op-rod.

My Winchester M14 has a roller.

My M1A is one of the early ones made with all GI parts (other than the receiver).

It has a roller on the bolt.

Your rifle is the best of them all. They started going down in quality when they ran out of GI parts.

My M1A goes back about 30 years with GI parts. Bolt has a roller.

Springfield Armory versions aside all the ones I have seen have the roller on the bolt. In the image the bolt is stripped and a headspace gauge inserted in the chamber.

Matter of fact there are tools and instructions for greasing the roller.

This video shows one . About the 13:30 point

I have NEVER seen a M1A, regardless of model, without a roller.
