45-70 FTX
I keep reading that you have to trim the brass to 2.040 and grind off the seater die so you can crimp. Yet I see Hornady's sight and it shows a case length of 2.100 for lever actions and this bullet. what gives?
Also, they list only H322 for lever actions. In trapdoor they have all the other powders. I'm shooting IMR 3031 or 4064, any data on that? |

Hornady 45-70 brass from their Leverevolution product is significantly shorter than standard 45-70 brass. Don't know if this helps but I'm not familiar with the FTX terminology.

In the 70s, "FTX" was Army jargon for "Field Training Exercise".
aka "Field Problem" aka pain in the weeds.... Not sure how its being used today...

I fooled with it a little bit.
My Marlin 1895GG didn't care for the FTX bullet, but the factory loaded Hornady brass is quite a bit shorter than the standard 45-70, IIRC .020. I did throw one Starline case on my trimmer and take it down however far and stopped at doing just one. I do have a custom Lee factory crimp die setup to crimp on the shorter brass that goes with the FTX bullet. I may try some other powders with it now that I am out of H4895. |

I load these on a regular basis now. It took a nice learning curve to get everything to work right because of that short case.
Here is a thread from a few years back when I started. http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=413318 |
