What Type of Slugs for 870?
Hi,
I'd like to try out my Remington 870 Express Tactical at the NRA Range here in Virginia but they only allow slugs. WHat typ of slugs are best for this? I just picked up a box of Remington rfiled slugs. Any suggestions? |

Each shotgun has it's own likes and dislikes when it comes to ammo, so get a few boxes from assorted manufacturers and run them through your gun to find what it likes best. My 870 groups the Brenneke KO's the best.

No need for sabots in a smoothbore- stick with rifled slugs. Brenneke KOs have worked well in every shotgun I've used them in so far, and the nice thing is (was?) that they were pretty inexpensive also. Makes me glad the last time I found them on sale for less than $2/box of 5, I bought a couple of cases.
Try a variety of what's available in your are and see if your barrel does remarkably better with any one brand/load. If it does, get a bunch of those. Otherwise just use whatever is cheapest... Oh- and don't bench it like you would a rifle, unless you want to court a flinch. Shoot it standing up with a rest against a post or whatever, if you can. Keep your hand or something soft between the gun and anything hard, or it will likely 'shoot away' from the rest. hth, lpl |

Brenneke KO's and Federal Tru-ball's do best from my various smoothbore slug barrel equipped 870's. Remington Sluggers do well enough that I buy a box or two at Walmart every now and again to add to the "stash".
Brenneke's and Federals are usually tit for tat as far as which is cheaper in the stores here. One seems on sale one week and the other the next. I buy whichever is cheapest at that particular moment.

I always shot Winchester Super-X. They did well by me. Accurate and killed everything I shot. What more can you ask?

Tru-balls are always a good choice.
