For my entire career to date I have been with the same agency. Starting in the early '90s I went through the academy, and the next ten or so years using 1911s of one stripe or another. Then the XD was invented and I switched to that platform.
I passed up on the issue BHP, HK P-7, HK USP, and the Glock 22/23. I have absolutely NO firsthand knowledge of a LEO needing to share mags or ammo. Anything about that is anecdotal at best. Last edited by KenW.; October 28, 2012 at 07:06 PM. |

I haven't worked as a cop in a long time. When I did I carried a S&W 19, but if I had the choice today, I would pick the Glock 23. Moderate size & weight, plus can use mags from other 23s or mod 22s.
But I'm a doc now, so what would I know?

Glock 21/22 is getting some heavy press as the majority...I'm very glad to see that specially from those currently or previously on duty.

Getting down to the finish line, all things continue well and it will be my M&P .40
Never a stoke, FTF, etc. Start to look at weapons, and what is an acceptable number of failures, differently when their necessity to save your life jumps 10,000 percent.

I'm currently issued a Glock 23. I work plainclothes and its a good weapon. In a perfect world I'd carry a Glock 30, but I was shot down.
I was previously issued a SW 6906, a Glock 22, and a SW model 19. Glock 22 and SW 19 were great. We blew up all the 6906's and that was later diagnosed as using way too much hot ammo combined with inproper maitenance. As a side note, just a few years ago during our 6906 crisis we had an department policy requiring that whatever weapon we carried had a safety lever that was to be engaged when the weapon was in the holster. I would complain about this as my giant hands combined with a very small 6906 meant I had to break my firing grip to disengage the safety. I was offered the choice to switch to a revolver if I purchased one. This was put out there to dissuade me but I was more than ready to buy a 686+ with my own money and carry it. We went to Glock 23's instead. |

This ones simple...a full sized .45 of course. HK45 or Glock 21 would do nicely.

In my days as a correctional officer, they would issue us S&W service revolvers in .38 Special. They were horrible to shoot in my opinion since they had stock grips. I had to qualify every year and I qualified well every but I would not buy one for personal use, unless I intended to change the grips.
We also had to qualify with Mini 14's and 12 gauge shotguns if we worked in the towers. I still like the Mini 14 to this day.

issue v. preference
I'm issued a SIG P220-.45, and carry same on a duty rig w/ 4 extra mags and all the other bat-gear that patrol gets these days. I've spent 15+ years now w/ the SIG DA/SA system and am still not really a fan.
My preference might well be the Glock 21. No decock to manage, no change in trigger pull, higher mag cap, same great caliber. |

duty gun
I've been a cop since 1981.
In that time, I have carried: Ruger Security Six .357 mag revolver (first few months I was on) Colt Combat Commander .45 ACP auto pistol Beretta 92F 9mm auto pistol Sig 226 9mm auto pistol Sig 226-DAK .40 cal auto pistol During my military service as an LE Specialist in the ANG and then an MP in the ARNG I carried: S&W 15 .38 Special revolver M1911A1 .45 ACP auto pistol Beretta M9 9mm auto pistol I liked all of them. I shot all of them well and have personal examples of all of them, which I still shoot to this day. If I was going to pick another gun for myself to use for uniformed patrol, I'd look at 2 guns: Glock 35 in .40 Cal (no compensator) Smith & Wesson Military & Police 40L in .40 cal I have big hands & long fingers so bigger guns are not a problem for me. And I'm tall, so carrying a gun with a 5+ inch barrel in a duty holster isn't a problem either

No doubt about it. Given the choice, I would carry a Beretta M9.

I've talked to a few old-timer cops, including one that taught my CCW class. Without a doubt, they'd all choose a .45 like the SIG P220 over a 9mm.
Considering that concealability isn't important, I can't say I'd argue with that choice. |

Out of the ones you've listed, I would go with the 92 because I'm thoroughly well versed with it from every angle (hi capacity and I have lots of mags). I always say to people that have never fired the 92 that I challenge them to try a mag or two and shoot poorly--The design of the gun is so utterly well balanced (literally brilliant as though JMB himself designed it--Hi Power was not listed) that it is actually quite difficult even for the novice to shoot poorly. I could go on and on and on...! That scene in "Lethal Weapon" where Gibson shoots a smiley face on the target is not far fetched.
Edited to add that if money were of no concern and we lived in a perfect world, hands-down the 1911 (I have a matching carbine as well which further makes it a plausible deal). Problem again for me is that ever-increasingly present variable of the declining value of the $ as inflation has gone absurdly wild with Washington printing more paper than "Charmin" (both looking as though they will eventually serve the same purpose ).

Thus far, I've carried:
S&W SW40F Sigma (urrrrp!) Ruger P90 (good gun, but a bit big) HK USP 40 (again, a good gun, very accurate) G22 (my second go-to gun) and what I carry now: Colt 1911 Enhanced, on and off duty. I don't feel hampered at all by magazine capacity--I carry 5 reloads (40 rounds) plus the full mag in the sidearm +1--makes 49 rounds. I have practiced my reloads; they're smooth and consistent. The gun itself is extremely accurate, as well as being totally reliable.

I'm issued a Gen 3 Glock 21. My first choice would have been a SIG P229 or P226, but the G21 is a reliable .45 with good capacity. I have really warmed up to it. When/if we eventually trade in our Gen 3s for Gen 4s I'm not sure if I'll buy it or not, but I'm leaning towards "not."

LE sidearms...
If I were a working LE officer; plainclothes/soft clothes investigations or a sworn federal special agent, I'd pack a HK P2000 LEM in .357sig with night sights with a smaller DA/SA P2000sk .357sig as a BUG-2nd gun.
In cold weather or in some conditions I may use a SIG P220R DAK .45acp with a Ruger LCR .357magnum, a S&W 642 .38spl or a .44spl Charter Arms Pug(DA only) as a back up. In general, I'd use either the .357sig or .40 for LE duty but I'd carry other sidearms depending on the uses(raids-warrant service, stake-outs, PSD/protection details, etc). Smart badge-packers use a 2nd gun or back up that can take the same full size duty magazine or they carry 2 pistols AKA New York Reload. Clyde |

We were issued the Glock 22
They let you carry what you want from a list as long as you qualify with it. Both on duty and for off duty plain clothes carry. |

If for some bizarre reason I went back to pushing a beat car, (highly unlikely at my age), I'd carry either a Sig 220 (old, German), or a 9mm Glock or S&W M&P.

All of the posts about revolvers vs semis are amusing.
While I was in law enforcement I carried a revolver the majority of time. I still often carry a revolver. For 95%+ of police gunfights a revolver would be fine. It's those outside of the box incidents where only 6 shots can be a bummer. No matter how much of a gunfighting legend you are on the range. |

Our police and SWAT are using Kimber 1911's, Sig P226/229, and there is a growing movement with the new PPQ as the striker fire gun of choice. Glocks are being phased out over the last few years. No love for them at all.
