Trip report
Had to come to western, VA for a conference and stopped at a coupla gun shops.
(Sheesh...Why do they call them gun shops?! They sell firearms, not guns) Okay...Off the soap box. Alleghany Arms in Convington. (1023 S Highlands) Nice shop. Has a good range of used weapons plus sells new Taurus, Glock and Smith and Wesson. Also has some of the more recent 1911 mini's (ATI I think) They are kind of sweet. Just like the original inoperation and appearance but almost small enough for CC. He had an Oviedo Mauser 7 x 57 for 159.00. It is way out of my interest range (Don't want to start loading smokeless and don't want to get into yet another caliber) but I almost bought it anyway. The action and bore are superb but the stock is badly cracked and badly repaired. He had three different kinds of BP subs. Prices were a buck more than the big guys but I bought two cannisters anyway. He also does light gunsmithing in the store. (Drill and tap for scope and such) Then went to Mountain Top at 212 N Monroe also in Covington. Shop is a little smaller but he had a good selection of battle rifles. Mosin Nagant, a Jap, and one other which I did not examine because it was already sold. He did not keep or sell loose powder. These two guy represent (IMNSHO) a treasure that we should work to preserve. And....This is one of the most beautiful parts of VA. Those who are close might want to drop by.

Covington is kind of central VA, isn't it? Or am I remembering it wrong (like that's never happened before)?
Went through there several years ago on a little sightseeing trip, but may have gotten a little mixed up. Just a ways off the interstate as I recall. BTW, they call them 'gun' shops cause it's easier to spel. |

"gun"shop is a holdover from the dark ages when you could call any firearm a gun and a magazine a clip and not get beat up about it. Now where is that pot stirring icon?

Mykeal
Because Virginia is shaped kindof wierd, it is either western or central depending upon the mood I am in.
It is about 20 miles from the West (by God) Virginia line. It is West of Rt 81 so I guess (today) it is west. But You can still go about eighty miles west and still be in VA. It is in the Shenandoah and Alleghany (I just learned to spell those two words so I am using them as often as I can) Mountains so it is just beautiful country. I am on the way home in the morning and plan to stop in a shop in Staunton.

Birch and Hawg
I joined the Navy on August 12, 1969.
As of that day a gun is defined as "Ordnance of one inch or larger caliber temporarily or permantently affixed to the structure of a ship." Always remember: "This is my rifle, this is my gun. This is for fighting, this is for fun."

The 'gun' being referred to in that particular homily, at least in my case, was never attached to the structure of a naval vessel (ship or boat) of any description. Now, as for the caliber....

I've stopped in Covington once.
There's a "home cooking" Italian restaurant off I-64 there... Go up and over the mountain to The Homestead. They've got a good shotgun range up there for shoot'n clay pigeons...which stay crunchy in milk. I think they play a game up there where fellers in tweed hit little round things round a field that should be used for farming. Great report!

Yep
Homestead is where the conference is being held.
The folks in tweed are alive and well. But I am not among them.

Mykeal..I owe you an apology
Covington is almost dead center of VA. Very difficult to call it "west" except for someone who lives in Chesapeake and to them everything in Virginia is west.

No apology necessary. You probably think Michigan is in the north, eh? We think we're in the center.

I recommend it.
It is a very picturesque part of the state.
