.355" bullets

Can 115gr. 9mm bullets with a diameter of .355 be used to load 380 acp?

If not, why?

The author of this article from Guns and Ammo magazine seems to think so...

any weight over 105gr is pushing the .380 for OAL and pressure.
the 102 gr GS from Remington shoots great in my BDA.

Guns & Ammo is not the resource for serious shooters anymore, seems to be more targeted to the neophyte

I was curious because my Lyman manual lists loads for a 115gr cast bullet. The 115gr velocity registers only a few fps slower than a 95gr bullet. I thought that was kinda strange.

So Bob Forker, who's written a book on ballistics, plus two updated editions, isn't enough of an authority?

Boy, this really is a tough crowd ...

Thanks for the link Ridgeway. I printed it and threw it on my bench. I gonna look it over more closely tomorrow.

It seems to me the main concern with heavier bullets is they can create a bulge where the inside of the case tapers.

check the first page of the article. practical wieght is limited to about 100grs. I load the Golden Sabre hp slug (102 gr) with good results but length is right on the margin of magazine fit for good feeding. this is in my BDA. this slug groups better than any other I've tryed. I use Power Pistol to load it.

Lyman's has load data for 115 grain JHP's and 120 grain RNL's, but what do they know. Just watch the lengths carefully with heavy-for-caliber bullets in small cases because the pressure can go sky high if you seat them too deep.

bob do you load per the Lyman data? I'd like to see a .380acp load w/a 120 gr slug.

I've just started loading .380ACP, currently only using 95 grain commercial cast bullets. (4.1 grains of Unique and 0.980" OAL is a good load. Going to try International Clays next because it uses less powder and it meters better.)

I have a mold for a 120 grain TC bullet that I think might be a good one for .380 but it will be a while before I try that.

Has anyone tried Lee's 105 grain SWC bullet? Does a SWC feed OK in a .380 or will it catch at the top of the ramp?

My Sierra manual also offers 115g data.....

(AA2Imp, W231, Bullseye, 700X, Unique; the smart safe choices...)
