Army surplus vs "tactical clothing'

I live on a farm and have a range onsite about a half mile walk away. Sometimes I just want to strap on a gun or two and throw ammo in my pockets. Jeans a light belt dont cut it.

I want to get some clothing that will hold a pistol without sagging and has enough pockets to load with stripper clips, packets of 7.62x54r or boxes of .22.

Is my best bet checking out army surplus stores and maybe getting some bdus and a backpack or should I look at the new clothing?

I''ll check out the surplus store nearby, never been before. I always thought range commandos were funny but shooting on my own property means dressing tacticool makes some sense

You can buy new clothing and backpacks for less money than BDU's and real military surplus packs. A "real" 3 day assault pack will set you back $90-$100 for a used one in good shape. New are getting hard to find.

Go to Home Depot or some other hardware store and buy a cloth tool bag or two. A lot cheaper than a range bag, and does the same job.

Unless you just like to buy neat stuff, what's wrong with a regular ole' inexpensive back pack to get all your equipment to the range?
Mine cost $10.
And, yeah, my range bag looks just like that tool bag, only larger.
Another ten bucks, brand new, at Goodwill.
I ain't cheap, would just rather spend the dough on something important, like reloading supplies.
Soft computer cases work good, too.
Nice and flat and easy to carry, with comfy shoulder straps.
Plenty of them around for only a few bucks.
Ok, ok, I'm cheap.

I'd go buy a backpack a steer clear of mil surplus. Not all of it is bad but there is some junk out there.

I have lots of Mil surp from around the world . Thats what I use . Train like you Fight , Fight like you train . Of corse I realy get into it .

I've actually ripped cheap Wal-Mart special backpacks and a range bag would be ideal except for the gates and hills I have to deal with. Nevertheless spending 100$ on sturdier pants might not be the smartest thing to do.

It would probably make sense to buy an sturdier backpack Instead I suspose

I still use some issued tshirt from 1988/1990 when I was in the military. I buy mostly military surplus, it serve me well

If I can find good gear in surplus,I have nothing against using it.

I have an older design Korean made knock off of a GI field jacket I like.

Some of it is good.Maybe its just me,but I have found the knockoff BDU's to be made of inferior cloth.If I get a little sag and kneel,the croth rips out every time.I quit buying them.

For what you describe ,have you considered a pair of Carhart bib overalls?

The pockets over the chest hold magazines or stripper clips just fine,but not a lot.No sagging,re-enforced knees that have a pocket to receive a pad,tough cloth...a bit crunchy when new,but once broke in,very comfortable.

Surplus Vietnam era web gear is cheap and available...web belt,suspenders,ammo pouches,canteens and assault pack.If you are on your own place,you don't need to worry about "opinions"and it was designed to do exactly what you are doing.

I have a knock off "courier" shoulder bag.It is compartmentalized.I can put brass in one section,it has a couple mag pouches,I can put binos in another section,pretty useful bag .I use it PD'ing

Cheap hiking pants are good too. Very reinforced for lots of pockets. I'll send the "just get a bag" comment. Cheap = good. Alternatively I'd prefer genuine surplus over cheap import stuff.
