What Do I Feed My New 629 Classic?

Was just sitting here wondering what is the
most accurate load, for puching neat holes
in paper from a .44 Magnum?

They will
be fired from a 5" barrel model 629 Classic.

Depends on how fast you want to punch those holes. I use 3 loads in my .44 Mags, all of which have proven to be very accurate. (1) Target/small game load --- 6 gr. Red Dot behind a Lee 208 gr. full wadcutter ( about 450 ft/lb) (2) Medium powered load --- 9.5 gr Unique behind a Lyman 429421 240 gr SWC (3) Full house load --- 21 gr. 2400 behind 240gr SWC or Speer 240 gr JHP. Use all 3 loads in my 4 5/8" SBH Ruger. Only 1st and 2nd load in my S&W 29-2. regards, birdman

My guns are rather fond of a 240gr SWC (mine are from an RCBS mold ...gas check design, though I leave the gas check off for paper loads) pushed by 8gr of Unique. Accurate and easy to handle, but a little messy. That really shouldn't be a problem with your stainless gun...unless you just REALLY hate to clean your toys!

Suggest W231 or Universal Clays and 180-240g LSWC for best accuracy.

Velocity range = 650-900fps.

I have lots of bullets and powders, but I always do the same load year after year:

240 gr JHP 24 gr H110

It does 1450 fps out of my 6 inch barrel. It kicks like a 44 mag should.

Using a 240 grain LSWC cast bullet, 5 --> 6 grains Bullseye, or 5.5 --> 7.5 grain Unique.

Any load in this range will be mild for target shooting (especially one handed) and they all seem to be accurate.

BTW: I happen to think the 5" Classic is one of the best handguns ever made. Looks and performs wonderfully.

When I shot IPSC, I used 5.8 grains of 231 behind a 200SWC in my 1911. Being too lazy to reset the powder measure, I just loaded some .44 Mag plinkers with that amount of powder behind a 240SWC.

Lo! And Behold! It worked just fine on paper, and trivial recoil out of a Redhawk.

You can diddle around of course, to see if a bit more powder helps accuracy...Whatever.

I too have a M29 Classic, in blue, scoped with a 2x, & a 6" barrel. My best & most accurate load: I cast my own from wheelweights, a 315 gr bullet with gascheck. The mold is from LEE. I also make my own lube from 1lb of beeswax, 2 toilet bowl was rings, & 1 bottle of LEE"s Alox. I size the bullets to .429". I put this on top of 20 grs. of H110 & a Winchester primer. At 50 yds, I have been able to get 1" groups off a bench rest. This load is a bit stiff, so you might want a shooting glove.

I have a S&W 29-2 6". For paper I use 8.7 - 9 gr of Unique pushing National Bullet's 240gr cast copper plated SWC. Good low-end load.

I congratulate you on your taste, the 629 is a real beauty. It's a bit too much gun for me personally, but it looks great nonetheless.

I don't mean this to sound rude, so please don't take it that way, but isn't a 629 a S&W product? I'll show my naivete and say that I didn't realize people were still purchasing S&W products.
