I found a unicorn.
Just stumbled into a 1983 Remington model 7 new in box. The bolt was never in it. The best part, it’s in 222. Made in 83 and 84 only. Had to buy it.

I can't blame you, I love Model 7s! Light, easy to handle. My Model 7 is a bench rifle in 223, but I have built some real beauties on Model 7 actions for customers.

Great find. I've got 2 Model 7s - an early .260 with the 18.5" bbl and a later 7mm-08.

I got a mod 7 in 223 years ago. Absolutely the worst shooting rifle I ever saw! Never own another one.

I paid 1450 for it. I don’t think I got hurt. It will make a good investment.

I bought my Model 7 years ago. Walnut stocked. 223 cal. Should have bought another in the rack standing tall next to it also. 7mm-08.
"Oh well can't buy em all I guess." The only problem I've encountered with my Model 7? Lazy barrel twist. 1-16 As the rifle is unable to shoot heavier bullet weight beyond 62 gr with accuracy. 52-55 gr. outstanding accuracy. Even with the Model 7s restrictions. "I do like the rifle" |

Only gun i ever had as a safe queen was an original 1861 Harpers Ferry 3 band. Bought it for $800 in the 80s. Sold for considerably more to help with purchase of my house.
Otherwise, if i buy it, i'm shooting it! Congrats on a good find though! Would like to have a 222 Mag.

Most people I know who wanted a model 7 didn't want a .222, but short-action deer cartridges like the .308. The .222 shooters wanted longer-barreled varmint rifles.

I had a model 7 in 223 . . .
I had a model 7 chambered in 223. Wanted to hunt coyotes with it. Out of the box the sights were WAY off. Mounted a scope. Got a lot better. Then discovered that the twist rate was too slow for heavier bullets. Had loaded up some 68 grain bullets and they key holed. Plus if the gun was not level when you worked the bolt . . . it didn't chamber. Jammed easily. So that got replaced by a Savage 11 which is a tack driver. Ah well . . . .

Model 7's are great handling guns. I've always liked them. Not enough that I'd pay $1,450 for one in any caliber though.

stuff you learn
I was not aware that the Model 7 was ever chambered in .222, so there ya go, I learned something (again) on these forums.
I always wanted one in .308 as a deer carbine........and later thought one in .223 would be a great utility type truck rifle. Never bought either. |

I have had 2 model 7's both on 7-08 first one was a beat up older model with sights and a scope, didnt shoot very well either, stopped at LGS and saw a nice walnut stocked model on the shelf used. Came home and got the old 1 took the scope off and traded it in. They didnt really offer me much for the old one but then informed me that the 1 I wanted was on sale 20% off which made for a sweet deal. I have carried and shot a few deer here in NH with that rifle, it is a keeper..
