My first platform rifle.

I never looked them. I always preferred more of a traditional in-line rifle. And I told my wife I wouldn't spend money on a gun for a while, but a guy I do side work for had a heavy barrel DPMS he bought around 04-05 and hardly fired it. We worked out a deal including 460 rds of wolf ammo plus a scope, and it's now keeping the rest of my guns company. It's a hot to shoot, but it seemed awkward at first. Thirty round mags are sweet, but they do still get in the way. More practice is warranted. I do like gun. It's just very different from a mini 14, or RAR. It shoots bout 3-4 inch groups at 100 yards with Wolf 55 grain soot sticks. I still have to try out different ammo, but that has to wait untill work picks up.

As in a modular platform system rifle, as in a rifle built on the AR-15 type platform. I don't like to say an AR-15 unless I'm actually talking about the old Armalite AR-15.

OK.

Also don't say kleenex or xerox or post-it either unless you are referring to Kimberly-Clark, Xerox, or Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company.

Keep it simple, use “AR15”or “AR15 style” or the ever popular “Modern Sporting Rifle”

That's just the term I originally learned.

"Thirty round mags are sweet, but they do still get in the way. "

I estimate I own 60-100 thirty round AR magazines but haven't fired a shot from one for years. Ten or twenty round mags handle any non-combat need I have.

I want a ten round mag for hunting. Then I'd still need to plug it to seven rounds.

Unless it has been changed, five rounds is maximum magazine capacity allowed for hunting with a semi-auto in Michigan. But then, what do I know...I didn't know what a "platform rifle" was.

FWIW
There are 5 round mags available. I think I have a couple of older mags with a reversible plug that makes them either 5 or 7 rounds.
There are several ways to "plug" a magazine which work OK until some overzealous bunny cop manages to force the follower past the stop. Makes no diff whether the mag will then feed from it's jammed position, only matters that he was able to load more than 5 or 7.
Stupid laws. IMHO.

Same here. I’ve got a Ten round mag that’s seen more action than all of my standard capacity mags combined.

Welcome to the AR world !

I suspect you will learn to enjoy the AR Platform.

Wait until you see all the available calibers that you can switch over to.

I'm enjoying my "AR15 style" rifle. I agree about the 30 round mags. I bought 2 of the 30 rounders to get started. They are cheap and common. I've only been loading them to half capacity. I plan to get some 10 and 20 round mags and I expect that once I do, they'll get all of my attention rather than the 30's. This is my 1st of this style rifle. Like you, I didn't have much interest for the longest time. Then, I got to thinking that putting one together would be an interesting experience. The idea grew on me like mold on bread and now I have one and I don't have any regrets so far.

I agree, I have 30rd mags only because the availability of them. When I shoot, I rarely fill one up. I’d much rather use 10rd, or like the stock Mini14 mag holds 5.

Runs With Fire, what comes next is the stripped lower as a platform to start your first build on. Then on, and on, and on!
You did say "first", didn't you?
