The hide>The Hunt

In my early (Maine) teens, I had a .30-06 Savage 110 that I used for both deer and varmints, but never shot a deer with it. I traded it for a .22-250 and got several varmints and a deer the first summer/fall with it.

I loved the .22-250 for varmints and turkey-shoot competitions. The wife also shot it and on a one-shot prone match at 100 yards, scored a perfect dead-center for the turkey WIN! It was the only perfect shot of the day, among the twenty-something contestants. I don't think she's ever shot a rifle since!

I'd say she proved what she could do with that rifle, and had no need to prove anything more to anyone!

Reminds me of something I watched as a teenager. Dad and some friends went to the local gravel/sand pit to sight in before deer season. One of the shooters was an older fellow, the father in law of one of dad's friends.

Targets were set at 100yds bullseye targets with an "X" in the center. when it was his turn, the old fellow slid a clearly well used Winchester 94 from its soft case and put two rounds in the tube.

Standing, completely unsupported, the chambered a round and fired.

The bullet struck between the lower legs of the "X". He levered the second round out of the gun and put the gun back in the case.

Saying. "that's it, I'm done for today!"

I never saw him again, but dang he could shoot!

Similar things happened to me before. 3"x4" target out 300yd. First shot dead on center. Continued firing the rest 9 rounds. 3 more hit target and the rest were off.

1"x1.5" target at 100yd. I forgot the longshot camera, so I just fired all 10 rounds without spotting the hits. Prone, A2 iron sight, front rest and rear bag. I was shocked. 8 hits and 2 barely off. Very delighted. Tried that again next range trips. 50% hit and no better.

It may be related. I have been trying to put 10 rounds into a 1moa target. The closest I have gone is 7.

I know that MV and drop can influence this decision but after that what benefits might go to the 22.
.22-250 is a whitetail hammer.

Add another one to the “Hammer” list.

If a 300 HAM’R is a “hammer” what is grandpa’s 30-06?

That'd be a sledge hammer.
