New To Me Winchester 94 Trapper 45 Colt
Found this little monster on line. Winchester Model 94 AE, SRC, 16 inch, 45 Colt. When I got it I was surprised how nice the wood was, I think the online pics flash washed a lot of the detail out. Nice walnut, nice grain with some figure. As good as I’ve seen on standard model late Winchesters. No safeties but does have the rebounding hammer.
First couple shots at 50 yards were 12 inches to the left. Quick double tap with a punch and hammer had bullets hitting in the middle. I used factory ammo, some ancient Remington and more recent Magtech Cowboy loads. Both were 255 grain lead flat points. The Remington was dirty, lots of blow by on the outside of the case, almost like black powder. The Magtech was cleaner and more accurate, but that could have been just the age difference. Both were close at 2 1/2 vs 3 inches. The carbine worked well, although I had two occasions when I opened the lever after a shot and ejected the spent case and the next round. That could have been on me though, getting familiar with it, although both happened toward the end of my shooting. I like this little carbine. Compact, powerful, can deliver big bullets on target out to 100 yards. |

Winchester Trappers are great little pistol caliber carbines and that's a real nice one. Good score.

I've got a 16in model 94, pre-angle eject. In 30-30.
I think they called it the Wrangler. Fun little carbine. |

Not really a "problem" per se, but I find it hard to have a pistol caliber lever-action carbine/rifle without a companion single action revolver. To the point I keep contemplating a custom .25-20 revolver to go with the Model 92 Winchester.

As my screen name would suggest I’m all about everything 44. I have a Rossi 92, Uberti 1866, and an antique Winchester 1873, all in 44-40. I noticed I was accumulating 45 Colt rounds, getting a box here and there at different auctions. I have a Ruger New Vaquero in 45 Colt, so decided to get her a companion. I almost got another Rossi 92, but then decided I’d rather go Winchester and be able to sell it for what I paid for it, instead of half what I paid. Back in the day before barrel length laws, Winchester made trappers as short as 12 inches. I’ve seen one before and they look pretty wicked.

I've owned a Win Trapper in 45LC for 30 years........I put a Redfield peep sight on it.......Anything 100 yds and under........Put that front post on it and it gets a 45 cal hole in it.

That’s a nice looking gun!
I had a 44 mag trapper many years ago, it shot very well. USRAC made some nice Winchesters, I believe all their M94’s had forged receivers. |

That’s a sweet lineup—those old-school .44-40s are just plain cool, especially the 1873. I totally get the logic on going with the Winchester over another Rossi too. Even if it’s a bit more up front, you’re not losing anything on resale, and there’s just something about the feel of a Winchester that hits different. How’s the New Vaquero shoot, by the way? Been eyeing one to pair with my lever gun too.

The New Vaquero is great. Shoots 1 1/2 inch groups at 15 yards, about an inch below point of aim. Ruger usually gives you an extra tall front sight so you can file it for your load. This one is close enough for hitting CAS plates. I really like the more compact size frame compared to my old (first model) Vaquero 44 Magnum.
