Smith M&P 22lr question

Hello everyone, recently just purchased a smith and wesson m&p AR 15-22 platform for economic shooting. Everything about this purchase is exceptional.

However, I'm just curious, what is the effective range of this weapon in yards. Im considering putting an optic on it for target practice, taking it out as far as it is capable.

What optic would you suggest, something that wont break the bank hopefully, I'm not very savy with optics persay.

Some people like lobbing rounds at 300m even with 10-12 feet of bullet drop but I prefer 50-100yds. The other thing to keep in mind is that even a tiny breeze plays havoc with the slow moving 40gr bullet. The charts below will give you an idea of the ballistics of a CCI MiniMag which is fairly typical of most 22LR ammo.

I prefer to stick with good quality optics and for that I'd look at a Weaver RV4 4x28 Rimfire (~$120) or a Weaver RV7 2.5-7x28 Rimfire (~$140). A Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 Rimfire (~$150) is a bit more powerful and a Nikon P-22 2-7x32 Rimfire (~$170) is a bit more tacticool looking but the Weaver V series are better scopes than the entry level Nikon P and Prostaff lines.

I have an M&P .22 and I put a Bushnell Trophy red dot (for daylight) / green (for low light) dot 1X32 on it. Well Under $200.00. Not top quality, but no cheapo either. It is a fun, effective combo. I don't shoot .22's much over 100 yards, and 50 is more average.
