Hey guys I got a model 10 serial 989xxx there's a "s" before the number dunno what that's for
And it's not labeled a model 10 just what I've seen from looking them up. This one says .38 Smith and Wesson Special CTG.
Edit: I've learned it is a 1948 thanks!

Yes!
.38 Military & Police 2nd Model.
SN's ran from 20976 in 1902 to 33803 in 1903.

Hey guys I have a Model 36, serial number 733XXX. I want to know what year this one may have been made. I'm hoping it's a newer production so I can shoot +P through it.

Model 36

There should be a J somewhere in the SN. Are you getting from the bottom of the butt? That is where the SN is located.

Yeah I'm getting it from the bottom of the butt, it just starts with 733, but no letters in the front.

The first J-frame Chiefs Special, s/n 1, was made October 24, 1950.

In 1957 S&W began using model numbers. The Chiefs Special was assigned number 36 at s/n 125000.

The serial numbers reached 786544 in 1969. As the Gun Control Act of 1968 was just coming into effect S&W began a new serial number series with a "J" prefix.

Since yours has no prefix it was likely made in the late 1960s, most likely 1968.

Modle 36

Does it say "Model 36" or Model 36-x whe you open the cylinder and look at attaching lug on the crane? If it doesn't it might be a pre model 36. How many screws does it have on the face plate? Can you send a pic? My email is [email protected]

New inherited S&W 22

I have just inherited my grandfather's S&W 22. I have no clue anything about it as my grandfather and father passed away several years ago, so no one to tell me anything. It says 22 LR CTG on the barrel. The SN on the butt is 104XXX. I have attached a pic (not great) of the gun. If anyone could help with the model and year, that would be awesome.

As was explained by Dave, it dates to the late 60's and would be a 3 screw and would be model marked.

I called this one wrong, thanks for the correct info Dave!
It's likely a model 34. Serial numbers ran from 101 in 1953 to 135465 in 1991 with yours made around the mid 60's.
See pic for model number location:
This is a 629-1.

The 6029 is an assembly number. See the pic for the SN location and include any letter prefixes. Also, is it a 5 or 6 shot?

Ok, I'll play. My Great Grandpa's model 10-5 .38sp SN C939***. When is it dated to? Also, my Dad says it'll shoot .357 also. What about .38p?

First off, do not shoot 357's in it. They operate at twice the pressure and they should not even fit (too long). It was designed, chambered and marked for 38 special. You can shoot 38 +P.
SN dates it to 1967.

On the inside it says "MOD. 36" and the serial on the crane is 446XX.

Wow! Thanks for the fast response and the info. I was told by my Dad that it was ok for .357 and have seen others that were listed to shoot both that's why I figured it was ok. I'll definitely stick with .38 and .38+p especially since I've got a .357 Blackhawk and .45 when more punch is needed.

Since y'all were so quick with that info I'll post in the shotgun forum with a Springfield and Excel 20 ga. shotguns I'm trying to get info on.

Thanks again!

Hello All,

I am a first timer here and need help with the production date of a Smith & Wesson Model 10-6 that I have received from a family estate. The serial # is D352XXX. Just want to make sure it is +p safe and if anyone knows approx. value for good condition that would be great.

Many thanks in advance for any help

Best,
Adam

S252XXX

I've searched this thread for "28-2". I'm thinking based on the S serials I've seen dated, 1964 maybe for mine?

wow...I just noticed how many first time posters ther were here.

Hello...

Yes, a great thread for the newbie S&W revolver purchaser and happy to be here I am more into collecting auto pistols and C&R but have this one revolver. I believe the serial # posted will place this gun in later production but am looking forward to Jim, Hammer and other members' input.

Best,
Adam
