Any .270 Win 130 gr loads anyone could recommend? - Page 2

I have used the 130 Speer Hot Cor and 130 SST with AR2209 (same as H4350) with good accuracy.

Neither of them were hot loads in my rifle. The load weight was a little over the Hodgdon data, the SSTs were averaging 3035 fps, I haven't chronied the Hot Cor yet.

They are both very accurate and effective on pigs. I am using the Hot Cor now rather than the SST because they are a good deal cheaper and seem to penetrate better.

Jack O'Connor shot the .270 Winchester about as much as anybody and the load he settled on is what I use:

130 grain Sierra SPBT set just off the lands
Winchester case
CCI Large Rifle Primer
60.0 grains of H4831

This consistently shoots less than 1" 5 shot groups at 100 meters thru my post 64 M70 Supergrade and should chrono 3,000 fps although I have never tested it. This is absolutely a maximum load in my rifle. You must reduce this load at least 5% and work up as with any other data.

ive tried the 60gr of H4831, but found the groups started to open up on me over 59gr.

IMR 4350 was always my most accurate powder, but I haven't had a .270 in a while. I think now I would try RL-19 against the 4350 to see if it was better.

You might want to check the data for RL 17. Gonna work some loads up based on what I'm seeing - increased velocity etc

I settled on 56gr of IMR-4831 about 20 years ago under either a 130gr Nosler Partition or Hornady Interlock. It shoots well in all my 270 rifles and doesn't show signs of excessive pressure in any.

Could be. Every rifle is just a tad different. Going from 60.0 down to 59.0 is less than a 1.7% difference. Heck, lot to lot variations in powder could cause that. IMR4350 is just super in my .30-06 and is really good in most any round with similar case capacities. IMR4831 is also good. Just a tad slower than IMR4350 and a tad faster than H4831. Just saying that at the time O'Connor was heavy into the .270, H4831 was his propellant of choice, it was the 1st thing I tried and it was so good that I didn't see the need for further experimenting. Wish I could say the same for my M70 Featherweight .257 Roberts. IMR4350 is to that round what H4831 is to the .270 but in my rifle, it didn't work out nearly as well. That's what makes load development interesting, and at times, exasperating.

When I got my first .270 back in 1973, I loaded the 130 gr. Sierra spitzer flat base over IIRC, 60.0 gr. of milsurp" Hodgden's 4831. The following year I used it with the 130 gr. nosler partition, same charge. Both loads were very accurate. My understanding is that current Hodgden's 4831 is a bit faster burning that that old milsurp powder and IMR 4831 even faster.
I no longer shoot 130 gr. bullets in my .270s as I much prefer the results from the 150 gr. bullets. Besides my rifles like them better.

So the Sako 85 obviously has a short throat!!! it wouldnt even accept my handloads above 3.270' with the Serria BTSP130gr so im figuring out a OAL of between 3.240 and 3.260'. but with the 3.250' ive already knocked a big mob of ferral goats and pigs off at over 200metres... cant be too bad. looking forward to some red deer over xmas!

With 130's I have had good results with 54.0 of H414 and CCI 250 (magnum) primers (much more consistant veleocities in cold weather!) ....

55.0 gr. IMR 4350
Federal Brass, Winchester Primers
Case overall length: 3.17''

Results...at 100 yds. Shooting 3 shot groups. The gun is sighted in for 200 yds, hence the 2 inch rise on the target.
